The big guy.  NBA always pays for size

The others are not max players.  Do not overpay.

Boom.

I like Middleton, but he's not a primary scorer, and he's only had one year of good defense (and one half season as an above-average offensive player).

None. I think all three are really flawed players that don't deserve max money even though the market will probably dictate they get it.

But if you are going to hold a gun to my head and say pick one, I think I would take Toby Harris and hope I could land him for less than the max, say a 4 year $52 million deal. His offense is diverse and slightly above average in its efficiency. I think Stevens could turn him into a better defensive player and with a few more touches he would make a good #2 option on a contending team some day.

But, I question whether being a Tweener will hurt him long term defensively and whether if made a primary or secondary offensive option on a playoff team whether he could succeed in that role. We shall see.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
For value alone I would take Monroe and not look back. He has been extremely consistent throughout his short career and if it didn't quite work out I think we could easily deal him. If Middleton or Harris didn't quite work out, then I think you would be stuck with 'bad' contracts - neither has the proven track record that Monroe has.

The other obvious reason is that he plays a position of major need for the Cs.

Can someone tell me what the dollar amount difference would be among max deals for the 3 guys listed here? I know Harris and Middleton are both restricted from the same year so I assume their max would be the same, but Monroe is an unrestricted with one more year of service so I assume it would be a bigger contract.

none.  none of these guys is a max player.  each has holes in their games.  to me, max players don't have holes in their games (not the extent that these guys do).  not saying they won't get deals over $10 mill per year but I wouldn't pay them max

Renounce cap holds and TPEs to free up 32 million if cap is 67million

Sign both Middleton and Harris at their max 14.4 per each

Draft night trade AB, Turner, Sully, Zeller, picks 16, 28, Brooklyn 2016 + 2018, Celtics 2016 1st. For Cousons. Yes that is five 1st and 4 decent role players. It's a good deal because I doubt anyone would give a established star player up for Cousins or so many 1st round picks.

Use 33 for Dakari Johnson and 45 Aaron White

Sign a young fa big with remaining salary my hope 2 year deal for Kevin Seraphin or Lavoy Allen

Starters=Smart, Middelton, Harris, KO, Cousins
Bench=IT, Young, Aaron White, Seraphin, Dakari Johnson.

I think that was true in the past, but in the current NBA with the cap about to explode and max deals only starting at around $15-16 MM (instead of $20 for a guy who is later in his career) those guys will all get max contracts.

Max salary for players of:

0-6 years of experience = 25% of cap
7-9 years in the league = 30% cap
10+ years = 35% of the cap

All three are below 6 years so they are all the same price.

Thank you.

So if the cap is 66.2 like it has been projected their max contracts would start at $16.5 MM and would increase by 15% every year?

they very well may get max deals but I wouldn't be the one paying them that much

As I posted earlier, a $16m contract under the new, higher cap we will see in a year or so is like $11m contract in today's market.  $11m is definitely fair value for Monroe, and while a gamble, could very well be worth it for Harris or Middleton.
