Let's be realistic about James Young

And to think the off-season hasn't even officially started yet... Imagine what we'll have when it does..

Also, Young is not even of legal age... Can we decide after his rookie contract is over, whether or not he's a bust? Gerald Green was mad young, and unskilled, and Rivers was the worst coach for him, as he doesn't seem to honestly play rookies... If Stevens had been the coach for Green, who knows how he would've flourished.

This is why I like Stevens a lot. We're going for a youth movement, but at the same time, Stevens has garnered enough respect for even most Allstars to respect him. I also appreciate James giving Stevens a vote of confidence.

It will only add to what is a bolstering and impressive resume for Stevens.

Let's see how he plays next season. He will have a full offseason and summer league and all that stuff. He won't be returning from an injury from a car accident. He will have a normal start and won't be playing catch up. He can shoot and drive to the basket, he is a very modern player. His game is like James Harden. Not saying he will be as good as Harden, just saying that's what his game is like. Give him a chance next season and I think he will play well.

He doesn't drive like Harden or shoot FTs like that, but I actually like the comparison and agree with the assessment.  JY is 19 and has a very good jumpshoot, a good head fake and decent ability to dribble 6-8 feet closer to the basket to get a shot off. 

In the modern NBA, a rounded out 24 year old version of that can space the floor exactly the way Stevens needs.  We have no one like JY on the team, regardless of what he is right now.  With AB & Smart there is some duplication of skillsets, and we have tons of picks and young assets we need to flip for a big fish or high draft pick.  Let JY play another year before judging.

Asking him to beat out Jonas J, Crowder, Evan T, Bradley, or IT would have been unrealistic.

I also watched him a few times in the Dleague and he was very off and on. He would disapear for long stretches, often got picked on on defense which was a huge concern. However everynow and then hed string together a couple really good minutes. He made some plays on D, and the most impressive thing was his ability to pile up points. He would go 20 minutes without making a shot than all of a sudden hed put up 10 points in 3 minutes.

The flashes of really impressive basketball are encouraging to me because I think it shows the skillset to be really good is certainly there he just needs to adjust and grow into the NBA game.

Excellent point.

He's aptly named; he was one of the youngest players in his draft class. 

It's unlikely he'll ever be a star, but he's got plenty of room to grow into a quality player.

He also showed that same profile in stretches with the C's, just didn't get as many minutes as in the D league.

I think he is going to be great.   In fact, I think he has the highest ceiling on the whole roster.

I don't think he is a certain bust, but he doesn't have the sort of skill set that excites me.  I'm worried that he ends up become the sort of player I hate the most: a no-defense, inefficient volume-scoring wing.

Here is me being realistic about James Young. At the age of 19 it is way too early to judge him either way.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't way too early to start making judgments about Darko Milicic when he was a 19-year-old NBA player.

It absolutely was. Especially because the reason he couldn't crack the rotation as a rookie was because his team was a contender.

Just because in retrospect it didn't work out doesn't mean that anyone could say with certainty it wouldn't work out after his rookie year.

I agree with this. He may just be a quiet kid, but it seems like this Cs team is built on energy and effort and Young may have a hard time fitting in. If he just thinks that his supreme shooting ability and measurements are going to carry him to stardom (there is no indication of this), then he will have a lot of trouble adjusting.

I really hope to see a different player next season - one that is mentally prepared.
