We've had some busts, but we've also had some success with slowly bringing along young players.   Avery Bradley was a travesty as a rookie.  Bradley played 31 games and averaged 1.7 points with Rondonian 34%/0%/50% shooting   We let Perk slowly develop as well.

Yes, let's be realistic.  He was the second or third-youngest player drafted last year.  He was always advertised as someone who needed time.  Anyone who's making a judgment one way or the other, unless they are on the Celtics and have insider information from his practices, really might as well just ask a Magic 8-ball its opinion.

Developing young players is going to become more and more important in the NBA, if players keep coming out of college after one or two years. D-league will become the next two years of their basketball education.

Making rash decisions on their further development will become the kiss of death for any organization that decides to partake in this short sighted decision making.

Meaning: James Young is a kid, he's 19 years old. Give him a chance to develop before you trade him for a declining and washed up "star" that will sign with any team willing to give him a juicy contract.

Should rename the original post to "Let's be pessimistic about James Young"

Project guys are projects. He was one of the youngest people drafted last year. If you go for young and upside, you've gotta give that upside a chance to come through.
My biases, in order of fervor:
Pro:
Smart, Brown, Hayward, Tatum, Kemba, Grant Williams, Sleepy Williams, Edwards!

Anti:
Kanter, Semi, Theis, Poierier

Yeah, but a bad rookie season is only indicative that the player is a rookie. It depends how those stats take leaps over the years, if any at all.

For James Young, I would like to see him get to the free throw line a little bit more and that means putting the ball on the floor.

Stevens needs to let these kids know! Smart included! That they are big boys and they can occupy space in the air too! They need to stop all those [dang] 3s.

i was high on young before the draft cuz he seemed overshadowed by wiggins and parker
he also had some very good physical measurements

but seeing his nba games so far has tapered by expectations for him
before i thought he would be a starter
now im thinking a solid bench player
this is because he doesnt necessarily standout in any 1 skill and his offense game is more of a project as well

Here is me being realistic about James Young. At the age of 19 it is way too early to judge him either way.

This.

I just don't think that it's possible to pass judgement on a 19 year young man.

Coach Stevens seems to always talk positive about the kid, so it might be a good sign for us.

I read all these commenters coming out and saying how we need to make room for James Young or that he has trade value. I've watched this guy in the D-League when he got sent down and it's pretty bad. This guy can't even defend D-Leaguers he is so bad at defense. His biggest asset was his shot, but that has not translated at all to the NBA. He can't handle the ball at all. So in other words he's a complete liability when he's in the game. He is a rookie so he can obviously improve, but I'm being optimistic when I say he can be a nice bench player. If he doesn't make any significant jump into next year I wouldn't be surprised if he is out of the NBA in 2016-17.

You can't make this type of judgment call so soon with an 18 year old rookie.  That's not realistic.

I have high hopes for him because his coach is always speaking how ahead of the curve he is at such a young age.  He seems to have a high bball IQ, and now he just needs to put in the work.

It might be tough to hold onto him though, because it seems Ainge has this ship turned around in a hurry, and a piece like a 19 yr old Young could look good combined with picks, etc. in a trade.

For this reason, I don't see Ainge waiting around for his development.  He's got a bunch of assets to get a 'now' player and I think a Vet, plus Young, plus some picks nets him a darn good player.

Danny expects him to be a contributor next year. Forgot to say that he missed training camp and summer league last summer so he had a big setback. And if it wasn't for that car accident, he would have definitely been in the lottery.

Getting Rondoed also has a new meaning now--since the Mavs cut him out of their playoffs shares.

Look at KCP, Otto Porter, Ben Mclemore, tony snell and others. Give these projects a few years to show.

Young was injured and never had a off season or preseason. Just a quite a few d league games.

BE REALISTIC. WE ARE GOING NO WHERE FAST!!!!
Let the youngsters develop. Draft and develop and sign good free agents.

Kid has the tools, but has some roads to travel.

Good thing is still young (pun INTENDED), and there's a ton of things to work on. It's going to be his 2nd season, if he can atleast improve his feel for the game, he will be a decent bench SG. If he just continue to work, we'll reap benefits in the long run.
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

I cant wait till he is is not longer young so we dont have to deal with these [dang] puns anymore.
Hahaha, Danny definitely picked him solely because they took Smart first and Danny thought it would be hilarious to pick smart and young.
