Correct. Start going through the list of best draft picks ever in the 8 to 25 range because that's where the Celts need to strike gold at least once in the next three or four years.

If you go all in on the lottery you don't have IT. And, you aren't guaranteed a sure-fire top player. So, while nothing is certain, acknowledge that there is more than one way to rebuild. and the Hinkie/tank method, which isn't neccesarily bad, isn't the only way and isn't neccesarily better.

Getting lucky and getting a nice player in the draft is going to have to be a significant part of this rebuild. I believe that strongly. Therefore -- the Celts will have to strike gold in that middle range.Yes, there are other ways to rebuild. I didn't say otherwise.

Of the players, Marcus Smart is the best gamble to reach stardom. That doesn't make it likely, though. There's probably 8 players from his draft class that I think have a better shot at stardom. But he's got the best shot of the current Celtics.
Earlier this year, the question was asked whether anyone on this team could be a future all star. While I love this team's grit, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, not only do I not see a future all star on the squad, I'm not sure I see a legit starter on a championship contending team. Don't mean to rain on the parade but we'll need to get lucky to take that next step.
It will be a bit frustrating to watch the Lakers, Knicks and Philly all have Top 5 picks this summer. Draft busts happen, but all 3 of those teams should be adding impact talent either through the draft or by trading their extremely valuable picks. Meanwhile, we'll most likely be drafting a couple more role players with our mid-to-late 1sts.
