Williams, in his 10th NBA season and first with the Raptors, amassed 78 first-place votes and 502 total points from a panel of 130 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics finished second with 324 points (33 first-place votes), and two-time winner Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers was third with 131 points (eight first-place votes).

I'm more into team honors, and I don't want to take anything away from Williams, but Thomas had the highest scoring average among sixth men, as well as the most games with 20+ points—not to mention he had a HUGE part in changing Boston's fortunes this season—so I don't see why Thomas didn't win, or how, at the very least, this wasn't a much closer vote.

Think Williams had the early lead. Amiother award like ROY where first impression are lasting ones. Thomas had better numbers.

Interesting. I thought the voting might be closer than that.

Regardless, I hope it motivates IT.

Good.  The nod goes to the guy on the better team, who played the role of the bench energizer to a T.

There probably were 2-3 other bench guys for playoff teams who were more valuable, but you can't argue too much with the selection.

I understand this outcome. If Thomas had been on the Celtics all year and playing at his level, I'd be more be upset that he didn't win.

Lou Williams played 2016 minutes.  Isaiah Thomas played 1726.  80 games vs 67.  I think that playing time should factor at least somewhat into season-long awards like this.

No shame in that.  Williams had a fantastic year, and played the same role on a playoff team all year long.

MPG  FG%  3P%  RPG  APG STLPG  PPG
Lou Williams: 25.2   .404  .340  1.9   2.1   1.1       15.5

Isaiah Thomas: 25.8  .421  .373  2.3  4.2  .9         16.4

This is an absolute robbery, especially when IT did it switching teams half-way through the year and leading his team to the playoffs.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

The two were really close when you break it down on a per-possession, or even per-minute, basis:

I can't fault voters for going either way, and if playoff position was the deciding factor, I can respect that.

Hopefully Isaiah Thomas goes out and scores 30 now that he has a chip on his shoulder.

I mean, I think that was obviously a big factor in it, because, otherwise, it doesn't make sense. However, look what Toronto has to work with compared to Boston. How much was Lou really carrying that team when you have multiple All-Stars playing with you? IT really came in and took this team to the playoffs from a horrible record, all while adjusting to a new team and system. In conjunction with the superior stats, I think that definitely warranted picking IT over Lou, even with a difference between 4th place and 7th place.

I said it earlier and I'll say it again.  I think playing time matters.  It's why the MVP race is perceived as a two-man race between Curry and Harden who played 80 games or more (so did Chris Paul) while Anthony Davis, Lebron James, and Russell Westbook aren't treated as legitimate contenders in anything I've read.

It's close enough that missing eight games with a bruised back could have cost Thomas the award, just in case you were looking for another reason to hate D-Wade.

I think it was the right decision. Lou Willliams is a good defender. Thomas is a liability. The difference defensively is greater than the difference offensively.
