I was thinking about all the moves we have made this year and I started to think about how we almost signed JaVale McGee. JaVale must be thinking he's a complete bonehead at this point in time. He had a chance to sign with a young team and prove what he's worth and instead demands a player option as opposed to a team option and the deal falls through. Afterwards he gets no other offers because everyone realizes he only cares about himself and meanwhile the Celtics make the playoffs.

So instead of showcasing himself on primetime tv in the playoffs JaVale will be sitting on the couch watching them.

Why would he care about showcasing himself for this year's playoffs if he was locked up for next year at the league minimum?

I don't think you've thought this thread through very well. Javale will be in the league next year and have a longer period to assess his options.

Well, I think this is just more proof that he's a bonehead.

What makes you think he's going to get more than the league minimum next year after seeing out the last 3 months of the season?

Is he really going to get much more than the minimum for next year though? The guy played 5 games in 2013-2014 and played 23 this year. Paying a guy that hasn't really played much basketball in a few years much money seems pretty unlikely. I think people want to see that he can play, not play like a knucklehead and also stay on the court. I personally don't think he will get much more than the minimum and an offer for a team option for the following year.

You couple that with the fact that Stevens has gotten the most out of a ton of players this season and we were a team that could really have used sized, and him being under contract for next year may well be the best situation he could have been in.

Its not about getting more money next season, but picking the best situation for him to rebuild his value for his next contract after his buyout money dries up.

He'll have a ton of options this offseason and a better handle of how much playing time and competition he'll be able to expect.

If that's the case why would the C's say no to signing him this offseason anyways? I don't think Danny is the type to hold a "grudge" over a FA deal falling through.

McGee missed out some potential playing time this season and perhaps spot minutes against the Cavs the playoffs. In return he gained his freedom to pick a team this offseason. He didn't "screw" himself, he just made a choice.

OP is also making the mistake of assuming that McGee would actually have been getting playin time to "showcase" himself. Who was he going to beat out for minutes? Zeller, Bass, Olynyk, Sullinger, Jerebko? He would have had the role Shav Randolph had. How did that work out for Shav?

Let's all take a moment to thank JaVale McGee, since he could have managed to screw up our playoff run.

That guy is toxic.  I'm glad he forced Danny into making the right decision.

He just needs to feed his family guys.

...I think faf is right though, he didn't sign anywhere because he didn't want a team to get him for the league minimum next season.

I am not really sure where you are getting the "ton of options" idea. He has played 28 games of professional basketball since May of 2013 when he was only playing 18 minutes for the Nuggets. The idea that a guy has been essentially out of basketball for two years and was a role player the season before that is going to have the choice of which team to sign for doesn't seem to vibe with the history of the NBA and players that missed most of two seasons. No other team wanted to sign him after the Celtics passed and no team wanted to make even a small bid on him prior to that when he was going through waivers. I would say it may be 50 50 whether he even makes the NBA next year. If he doesn't not getting a year of guaranteed money was a really stupid mistake.

Completely off topic, but are you a fairweatherfan again now that the C's are back in the playoffs?

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

He had 5 to 6 teams who wanted to sign him to a deal with a team option for next year.

Why wouldn't those teams be interested in the offseason? They very likely will, along with more teams since midseason moves are often roster spot limited.

Doesn't quite seem "fair" yet; I'm considering a change to "Partly cloudy with a slight chance of ring weatherfan" but it doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well.  Maybe next season  :)
