Poll: The Lopez Brothers as a Package Deal

On Monday's Bill don't Lie Bill Simmons and Zach Lowe discussed possible free agent centers that could be availible this offseason and perhaps one of the most interesting choice also happens to have a 7' tall brother who happens to specialize in everything that his more high profile brother struggles with.

I'm speaking of course of Brook and Robin Lopez both whom could be looking to lock up long term deals this offseason. When Boston was inevetibly raised as a destination Lowe was quick to douse the idea by noting that unlike the Morris twins last summer The Lopez Brothers can't really play together.

Both are lumbering 5's best suited to be paired with mobile athletic and/or floor spacing forwards. No team is going to lock two players up to big contracts if they can't play together... or could we?

Brook's unique ability to score at will in the paint would pair well with Zeller's hustle and grit. Zeller can protect the driving lanes while Brook swats shots and rebounds at the rim. Such size would be a problem for every team in the league to handle and the dropoff for thatthe matter would be almost non exisitant.

When the two get tired in comes the biggest 2nd unit is in the league. Kelly Olynyk and Robin Lopez would potentially be a very complete pairing. Kelly is free to attack and utilize the smart cuts the Robin would provide. Kelly's three ball would enable Robin to gain inside position for post up and offensive board opportunities.

So what about the package deal? Do we pull the trigger and put our future cap situation in the hands of a Comic book nerd like Brook Lopez? If so would also signing Robin be positive or negative?

I rather gamble on Boogie than Brooke Lopez,   I don't trust Lopez to stay healthy at all.


I do like Robin as a back up 5 tho.

Putting Robin aside, I would definitely not risk a significant fraction of my salary cap on a player that I know up front is such a big injury risk as Brook Lopez.

The Brooklyn Nets are a horrible disaster for three reasons. (1) They paid Deron Williams the max and he fell apart, (2) they paid Brook Lopez the max and he's never healthy, and (3) they traded away every pick they could for elderly stars.

I would not like to repeat ANY of the Nets mistakes.

Robin is iffy for me but not a fan of Brook. He may have stayed sturdy for a lot of this year but dont forget how injury prone his career has been.

Looks like Brook will opt out. I hear everyone's argument against Lopez and before this year I'd probably agree but he also could be a similar case to Zydrunas Ilgauskas where he suffered nasty injuries early in his career and may be starting to get past it, especially since he's now scoring more off floaters and cuts than back to the basket post moves.

Fwiw when playing at his peak Brook Lopez is probably the best offensive center option we have. Question is can he remain healthy enough for long enough stretches to be effective.

Signing both was a silly idea by Simmons. Is Robin going to sign here to back up his big brother? I doubt it. He is a starting caliber center, can't see him taking a back up role.

Robin Lopez would be a great defense first big man option.

I would be very happy to be wrong on this one.  Brooklyn loses its best player and still has $70m in salary.
