I don't know how many times I look at the box score and see Smart's stats...shooting one for whatever...so my nickname for him is "one fer."

Having said that - glad Smart had the winning basket against the Raptors - notice that the shot was at point blank range however.  Smart can't shoot - but what is new...we knew that when he was drafted.

Can Smart improve his shooting percentage?  Sure hope so...36.2% for 60 games - pretty sorry FG %

But the Celtics as a whole don't shoot well as a team.   Two top scorers Bradley and Thomas are shooting 42.7% and 41.9%.

As bad as the Celtics are at team FG%, they are still in the hunt for the playoffs which is great.   Hope they make it even if they lose in the first round which is almost a given.  Playoff experience would be great.

"one fer" wow...very clever.

Is 36% a bad FG%? Sure. But when you put it in context...

The kid averages all of 4.5 shots per game, the vast majority of which are 3pt shots. Which makes sense, because he's never allowed to do much of anything except park his butt at the arc and wait for an open shot. And btw, he's shooting right around 33.5% from 3, which is a huge improvement from the 28% he shot in college and is considered right about average. He's not a "horrible" shooter . He's average.

This. FG% is almost irrelevant for any player that regularly takes 3-pointers. Effective Field Goal % is where it's at. The old, simple analogy ESPN used to use is Shaq's 60% FG% (3/5 on 2PA) is as good as Ray Allen's 40% FG% (2/5 on 3PA).

Why all the hate for Smart? He's shooting .403 from 2 and .332 from 3 - not great numbers, but not terrible for a defensive-minded rookie, and in fact his 3pt shooting has been considerably better than expected. His TS% is a totally respectable .489. Lay off him, he's had a good rookie year.

All you guys who don't like the nickname...if you are so clever, what would be nickname someone who only made one basket 19 times in a game this year?

If he was a good shooter he would at least shoot over 40% from everywhere despite the fact he only takes about 4 shots a game.  I would like to see how many times he shot on average in the 19 games he only made one shot.

Time will tell if Marcus can ever develop into a decent shooter...right now he isn't close.

Personally, I like Smartacus.

And btw, Smart's been shooting around 33-34% from 3 all season. That's not horrible, or even bad. That's average, and a huge improvement just in one year. And since the vast majority of his shots have been 3's, the lower FG% makes sense.

Josh Smith was 35% from the field and 25% from 3 last year in Detroit and took A LOT of 3pt shots. That's a horrible shooter. Smart has been quite average. Which, considering everything else he brings and the improvement made in his jump shot, being average from 3 is a great sign. His future is bright.

Me and my buddies usually go with Marcus Dumb when describing him and his shot selection.

He's not a good shooter, but I think he's been taking good shots, if that makes sense.

I guess I can appreciate the fact that he's not afraid to fire away?

He should find more effective ways to score, use that big frame, hasn't found his scoring niche yet. But the kid is clutch.

You should be looking at his effective FG% (eFG%) which = the number of points achieved by divided by the number of shots.  A much better way to look at shooting from the field than  FG% which is pretty useless as a stat with the way the game is played now with even bigs shooting beyond the arc.

Bradley's eFG% is 48.8% ranking 238th out of 488 scores (per basketball-reference.com). This is just above the median which given how many long twos he shoots, the worst shot in basketball on a risk/reward basis, is pretty good.

Smart is ranked 330th and his eFG% is 45.8%.  That should go up a few percentage points over time like most players as he gains experience.  Smart's may go up a little more I'm guessing since his shot selection when he first entered the NBA was pretty bad and he really hasn't driven much considering that was his bread and butter in college.
