This goes to show how spoiled we are with Danny Ainge as a GM. Off the top of my head: We've had 6 first round picks in four years. Three are solid rotation players with potential (Sully, Smart, Olynyk). Two are busts in the mid-late first (Melo and Johnson). And one is up in the air (Young). Not to mention our second-rounder in 2012 (Moore) is still in the league with the contending Bulls.
Seriously, what other fan base wouldn't kill for that? The Timberwolves who have gotten the likes of Johnny Flynn and Derrick Williams with top-5 picks? Danny is now competing against himself in fans' minds. Everyone expects a Big Al or Rondo with a mid first rounder. Credit to Ainge for creating that precedent.
Also, who else could we have gotten this past year? Stauskas? Vonleh? Randle? Dougie McBuckets? Unless you would have not complained drafting a skinny mystery-stash Euro with the team's highest draft pick in years (hint: you probably would've), then there are no other real options. If we had Payton, I have a sneaking suspicion people would have hated him (what other PG puts up triple doubles and can't shoot a lick?)
This has been oft-stated: the guys Danny passes on, everyone passes on. Parsons was a second-round pick. What's that mean? At least 30 teams passed up on him. (I think he was actually picked in the mid-40s, making it even more.) I'm still not sold on GA. He's an athletic freak, but he still can't shoot a lick. Look at his "career high points" video on YouTube. There are literally no shots outside the paint. (And what "superstar" is barely breaking 12 points a game?) He's statistically, on offense at least, very similar to Olynyk in point production while offering a less-versatile threat. You often hear bigs reference the threat of an Olynyk three as a big problem. Giannis is a much better defender, but I think he's still too much of a liablility floor-spacing wise to have realistically thrived as a Celtic.
If that well-thought-out enough for you?
