The weight issue in the NBA always kills me. What many of us need to realize is by normal standards Sully is not fat. I always find it amazing how skinny most NBA players are. If you go down and meet any of these guys pregame they are bean poles.

That is not to say that sully does not need to get his act together. His weight is causing conditioning issues and health problems. I hope he is mature enough to see this and take control but I fear he is not.

I'm not ok with this narrative that he's getting hurt because he's fat. A dude his age can deal with a lot more appetite and burn so many calories with strength training--- it's got to suck nursing a bad back with pool workouts, exercise bikes, and caloric restriction when everyone else is doing heavy squats and rows.

It's a vicious circle, and it really sucks. I feel bad for him.

Not too bad, though-- he's got a few million dollars after all.

This quote really killed me.

If his excuse for overeating was to say "but I was hungry", then I don't really have any faith in his ability to lose weight.

A 6'7 guy in his early 20s who weighs over 300 pounds isn't fat?

(He's got a BMI over 33, which puts him well into the "obese" range by the common standard.)

Well, BMI is a notoriously ineffective measurement. For example, when I was fighting at 185 lbs. at 5'9" with 11% body fat I was registering between a 29 and 30 BMI. It doesn't really take into account lean body mass and muscle.

That being said, a 6'7" professional basketball athlete in his early 20's is definitely fat. Clinically, he's more than likely over the 20% body fat percentage, which makes him clinically overweight. I'm amazed that he can actually gain weight AND get over 300 pounds during the middle of the season when most guys lose all of their weight they gained over the summer.

nor does he. and that may be the central problem here.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

He is the type of guy that will get in shape for his contract season, have a good season and everything will go back to normal, after he gets paid.  Hoping DA doesn't take the bait....

Right, so you wait till he loses weight and trade him before "the inevitable" ever comes to frition.  I'm with you though, in terms of being reluctant to pay him.

I agree with you that BMI is unreliable, but the OP said Sully was skinny by non-NBA standards, and that's just not so. (And the BMI calculator I used for Sully would have had you at 27.3: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm)

I just don't get it.  This is a kid with back issues.  Doesn't he realize that the weight could cut his career short?  That he's potentially costing himself tens of millions of dollars if this keeps him from reaching his max potential?

I get why millions of people are overweight.  Bad eating habits, fatty / sugary foods being the easiest and cheapest to prepare / buy.  When you're a millionaire, though, those excuses go away.  You can eat extremely tasty food that isn't bad for you, made for you by a personal chef.  Sure, it takes some discipline, but use your future contracts as a motivator.

Exactly what is he eating? Sullinger has enough money to stock up on a bewildering variety of the most delicious low-calorie snacks the world has to offer. Is his pantry full of Doritos and cupcakes, freezer full of Ben & Jerry's?

I may have been remembering my measurements a bit wrong, but I know I was below 15% on body fat percentage and it had me at or close to obese on BMI.

I like how Ainge is nipping this issue in the bud right away.  No need to prance around it.  All parties involved know where he needs to be, and it has to light a fire in the young man at some point.  I think that point is now.

It won't be easy for him at all.  But like Ainge told him, " He HAS to find a way "

I hope for his sake he can find a way.  He can play the game, and he'll only get better if he brings that weight down.

Sully says the worst he thinks that could happen with his excess weight is that he'll only be an NBA player for 8 or 9 years (and, of course, set for life).

It sounds like he'd be happy with Big Baby's career.

On a positive note, averaging 14/8/2.5 while weighing 300 lbs is pretty insane. Confirms my belief that he's an all-star at 250-260 lbs.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.
