This is just what I thought, he put on a ton of weight during the season.  Hoping he gets the picture because he is talented....

Wow. I didn't realize it was that bad. Looks like DA has finally had enough. I love that he will probably have a "weight clause" in his next contract lol Most people have clauses like that to incentive them to get more rebounds, points, or blocks. Sully will be incentivized to not be a fat arse. lol

Wow over 300?!?! Sigh... If he slimmed down and really focused, think about how much better he would be.

Sully: "People say, 'Hire a nutritionist,' but it's not that simple. What people don't understand is after a game, you get hungry. I stay up late, I'm not falling asleep and I want to eat. The hardest calories to burn off are those late-night calories."
(double facepalm) Is that for real? This is the kind of excuses you hear from middle age housewives not professional athletes...

He is the type of guy that will get in shape for his contract season, have a good season and everything will go back to normal, after he gets paid.  Hoping DA doesn't take the bait....

Once again, Jackie delivers the goods way ahead of the rest of the local hoops scribes.

Facing up to it is the first step to fixing it.  I wish he would not blame his body type in this article for me that does not bode as well.   He is the one who put stuff in his body.   There has to be some accountability otherwise he could develop a victim mentality that will sabotage him.

298 is ridiculous for a man his size that is playing PF.

Saying the right things, but he said this stuff last year, too.

Quote
WALTHAM, Mass. -- In an offseason aimed at getting in the best shape possible, Boston Celtics third-year big man Jared Sullinger went through a workout with the team's summer squad Wednesday at HealthPoint.

"[Joining the summer practice is] another opportunity to play against other guys and kind of push myself to another limit, work on things that I don’t normally work on by myself and then I’ve got bodies out here. Going against bodies, pushing myself through contact. So everything is kind of helping me with conditioning."

Pressed on if he'd dropped any weight this offseason, Sullinger said that's not his focus.

"It's more shape," said Sullinger. "How long I can run, how fast I can run. Pretty much how long I can stay on the court without passing out. I’m working on that every day..

This was July 2,  2014.   Same talk let's hope he carries through his time.  If I was Ainge, I would make him train all summer in Boston if that is possible.  It is probably not due to the CBA.

He will be better but he was not a good athlete at the NBA combine when he was slimmer.   He is not that kind of guy.

How bold is it for him to show up 20lbs heavier than his goal??  That's so crazy to me....

It's tough for some guys to lose weight, it really is. We shouldn't have outsize expectations for this summer - he just isn't the type of guy that can drop 10 lbs per month. The C's should set realistic, attainable goals for him and demand consistency. Get down to 275 by the start of the season, 270 by all-star break, 265 by the end of the season, and keep those good habits in place every day. If he ever gains weight during the season, bench him right away and don't let him play until he loses it again.

Yeah, his body language and the language he used in the article doesn't inspire much hope for me that he'll change.

And I'm someone who can relate to him. I've always been a bigger kid reaching 230 at 5'9" my first year of college. I was never overly fat, but I was never confused as a skinny kid. But I started training mma and completely changed my body to where I was fighting at 170 lbs. 9 months after I started training with 8% body fat. It just takes hard work and the right attitude.

Speaking of this, I've really packed on the pounds since I stopped training mma and playing ball 4-5 nights a week. I'm up to 265 now since I pretty much stopped everything but working out (granted that's at 22% BF and quite a bit of muscle), but without that constant energy expenditure of playing basketball or training mma all of the time it's harder than hell to lose the weight. With as many calories as these guys burn playing ball, I have no idea how Sully can be 300+ pounds in the middle of the season. That's unfathomable. He must have had an extremely poor diet.

I agree with you mostly but for him to show up 20lbs over what they asked is a slap in the face.  By the time he got hurt, he was a sloppy mess.  His weight got out of control.  I am in the camp of if you are a professional athlete and have access to world class trainers, nutritionist and facilities, then being this out of shape is pathetic and there should be consequences.

Horsecrap. It's not like he has a thyroid problem or anything. He can lose ten pounds a month. They say a safe bet for average people is 2-3 pounds a week (totalling 8-12 per month), and Sully is far from average. He's quite a bit overweight and can easily lose ten pounds a month. At his size, he shouldn't be over 255 lbs. It's just going to take a lifestyle change for him to actually do it.

If he's right that he's already down to 285 again, he's got six months to lose another 25. That's about a pound a week, which is nothing for a guy his size.

But I hate hearing all the flimsy defensive excuses about his genetics and how much more everyone else can eat and how hard it is for poor Sully--and that he'd have to go to bed starving after games not to keep packing on the pounds.

As one of the comments on the ESPN page notes, a 'cup of fruit' is very much the wrong stuff for him to be snacking on. For all his millions he should have found some competent expert and/or chef to put him on the right track by now.

He's coming up on a contract year, however. Even though last summer he failed at his one job--to lose weight--he's got more months and more incentive to get it done this year.

Still, I'd hope he loses the weight and then can be traded out. Even a weight clause in a new contract won't cure his attitude.

Oh, and you're right--he should have been benched for his weight long before now.

I would like to see him lift too, a strong 260 is better than a pudgy 298.  A lot of his pushing his guys around is bulk, not strength as he only benched 185 9 times at the NBA combine.  Weight lifting would help him keep weight off, because muscle burns fat.  If done properly it can help vertical and explosiveness.
