I think he's stepped up phenomenally as a leader and clutch performer.

He's locked into a long term contract.  I say name him captain in the off season.
Yup

He's good but a captain is someone who to me, is the go to guy. Bradley? Don't see it. Pierce was and will always be my fondest recent Captain. Rondo didn't deserve it, and its a title that shouldn't be easily given away.

Timely question that I can't answer. One thought is, when this team is "two players closer" to being a title team? Is AB still starting?

As of today the "no stars" label remains. IT is the "star" I suppose, but, he doesn't start.

I got to disagree, I don't see a relationship between being a captain and a leader to being the go to guy. Captain don't have to have the best bball skills to be a good captain.

Please no. I'm a big fan of Avery, but he's also one player who can let things go up in his head. You'll have to worry of him beginning to try to do stuff that are beyond his skills just because he's "The Man" now.

Let him be were he is right now. No need to call him a Captain.

From a leadership standpoint, I have no problem with him being a Captain, but I would really worry about his floor play would be affected by it, and I don't think it'll be in a good way.

This is more of my way of thinking about captains.Though I'm not sure how often it works that way in reality of the NBA.

How many teams have official captains today? Is there a list?
Yup

Fair point, though he has sort of stepped up in this regard already

I think by default he might be the captain. he has tenure on this team, and a veteran amongst a bunch of kids that aren't ready or deserve to be called such.

I think naming captains is overrated though.

all that aside, still hate the contested, early shot-clock shots AB takes...

Is the idea of a Team Captain even necessary? I mean what’s he supposed to do, take up grievances with the coach or something? Or do you mean he would be the player that most exemplifies the team spirit?

I vote, they don’t need a captain. From a media stand point, it makes it more difficult to be traded say an upgrade comes along.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I like Avery, but don't really see him as a captain anymore than I would see Bass as one. I am assuming if Smart can continue his development through next year that he will be named in year 3 or 4 - he just has more of that leadership personality.

Let's hold off on the captain stuff.

Rondo was named captain and was traded a year later.

Besides, the team doesn't really need a captain right now

I'm not sure. I think labeling a captain might go against our philosophy of late as a very team-oriented group, and I think that's the type of team Stevens wants to eventually build, too. I'm not saying the notion of a captain isn't consistent with this philosophy, but I'm not sure that anyone has really separated themselves enough to warrant that labeling.

We don't need a captain on this team. Not right now
