Big check and a no trade/or trade bonus clause and that should help a signing IMO.

If I;m an established A list NBA star then I'm not joining the celtics. Just not enough talent to compete for a championship next year. I would have to bring another stud with me be make it work.

If I'm a budding star looking to take the next step into true NBA stardom then yes I join the Cs. An example would be Harden when he was traded to OKC. He joined a team looking for a star took the role and ran with it. Jimmy Butler could be this type of player

I think this is where I suscribe. A youngish guy looking to be "the man" of his own team.

The question then becomes, who else has the cap space and the "Come be our star!" pitch that Boston has to compete with...
A young budding star is almost certainly going to be a restricted free agent.  So his current team would almost certainly match any offer we made.

More than that even.  Player options for years 3 and 4 wouldn't surprise me a bit in the modern league.

yeah but what other comparable teams are as good as us right now? Who has it as "together"

you want to go play for the jazz, 76ers or Celtics?

I think Utah actually has a really nice roster and Gobert is about to be a monster.

They may have an appealing pitch, but you'd hope wearing a "Celtics" jersey and Brad Stevens wins out.

No -- no star talent to team up with.

No star but dont forget friends and relationship factor.

For example Jimmy Butler and Jae Crowder are good friends.

Let me see if I get this. Jimmy Butler, one of the most sought after free agents of 2015 and who will essentially have his pick of teams, will decide where to play based on his friendship with Jae Crowder - a marginal NBA player who based on Danny's roster turnover over the last year has a roughly 10% chance of being on the team at the end of next year.

Honestly.

what? Jae Crowder is going nowhere . Danny knows how much CBS likes him and how much of a factor he has been in the 4th quarter. It would take Jae Crowder holding out and some other team offering him  7 million plus a season for the Celts to end ties with him

Glad I have that on your authority. Have your sources also told you that he loves that dirty water?

Tell you what. You make a list of max-level restricted free agents who went to a crappy team because their career-bench-player friend (also entering free agency) was there.

I'll make a list of max-level restricted free agents who (a) were simply resigned by their existing team, or (b) ended up with a contender, or (c) ended up with New York or LA (both of whom will be able to make max offers).

We can compare, but I will submit now that my list will have a lot of players on it, and yours will have none.

I think the sweet spot for the Cs might be 2nd-tier guys like Khris Middleton or Danny Green. Green in particular might be the best 3-and-D guy in the league, and would be a big upgrade over Turner for the right price.

Adding another plus defender and an elite 3PT shooter in one person would be really interesting, at a position of need (SF, although he can play SG as well). He'd also pair very nicely with Thomas, who is relentless getting to the rim but doesn't have any great shooters to kick out to right now.

Middleton is a restricted free agent.  The Bucks would most likely match any offer.  Green is unrestricted but you would have to significantly over pay for the Spurs not to match it plus they can offer 5 years.

Good point.

Signing Jimmy Butler would be HUGE. I am not saying getting him would make the Celts the favorites to win the title but it would be a huge step in the right direction.

No offense to Turner or Crowder, but I think this team does need an upgrade at SF. I know Butler is naturally a SG but I think he'd make a great SF or you can play him at SG and deal Bradley.

Regardless, getting Butler would be a huge coup and I agree that someone like him, Kawhi Leonard, Draymond Green or Tobias Harris would most likely be tempted to come to Boston.

Somewhere where they can get out of the shadow of their teammates and try to become "the man."

Come on man, this is a multi-million dollar business. Friendship means nothing compared to that.

The addition of Thomas helps. Current form helps and the fact that Stevens has gone a long way to proving himself a NBA capable coach.

I think you could convince a star with another star, so part of your approach is 'we already have a commitment from...'. The question then is, do two upgrades make us a contender?

I think we can convince some very good talent that that is the case.

what your not factoring is , I'm not stating for these guys to sign with us on a discount. Celts would have to pay to get these key FAs

Just that a friendship or other factors could be possible that a player signs here

I mean Mcgee almost did sign with the Celts. Who would of expected that

If the Celts added an Aldridge or Gasol, how good would the team be??

Look at the Blazers. They are essential the Celtics + Aldrige and Lillard (IT is like our Lillard)

We have Lebron or a healthy Durant on our team right now and we would be considered one of the favourites to come out of the east.

I don't think we are off a few big names.  One big name or two more IT like players

When James Harden joined the Rockets he joined a franchise that had only dipped below .500 twice in the last 20 years ('93-2013), despite having worked around an incredible number of roadblocks to their superstar players.

The situations aren't comparable.
