That's the point, he already WAS on a cap-friendly deal. Everyone and  their mother knew that if he's cut, he's not coming back.

Right. I don't think they intended to bring him back, once they didn't pick up his option.
You're right, I think I got confused from the WEEI article's title...

Going to a more zone-based scheme may work, IF they can get to the quarterback more consistently.  The new guy they signed from the Browns, hopefully a healthy season from Chandler Jones, some blitzing from Jamie Collies...  maybe Easley can take a step forward in his second season.  But they've got to get that figured out - the pass rush has been so inconsistent.

Maybe they figure it's more cost effective to build the defense that way, given the cost of acquiring elite cornerbacks.

Pats CB will loose EVERY jump ball

Done deal:

"@AdamSchefter: Patriots signing former Browns LB/DE Jabaal Sheard to a 2-year deal worth $11 million, per source, including $5.5 million guaranteed."

WELCOME TO NEW ENGLAND, JABAAL SHEARD!  ;D

Welcome to NE. I'm excited by this signing. I remember when he was coming out in the draft and thinking Pats might pick him but didn't.

I think he'll be helpful this year, backing up Ninkovich and Jones. But... and here's the kicker....
you want to know the real reason the Pats signed him? He's option B if the Pats can't resign Chandler Jones who becomes a FA next season. That's called forward looking.
Also, Ninkovich is pretty good but he's getting up there in age. Won't be surprised if they let him go in 2016.

I never like losing any free agents, but it'll be really sad when RN's time comes.  He's one of the guys who exemplifies "do your job."

I can see it now...our CB getting beat deep on WRs double moves.

This is an amazing takedown of Goodell regarding the latest NFL controversy about the "legal tampering period".  This guy is such a clown commish.

TP.  Goodell is on the case again, I want to write a sentence here about how he's the worst detective in the world, but I can't write the amazingly hilarious thing I want to because this site is G rated and mine would involve some incredibly colorful language.  In any case, I'm sure we'll get that apology for Deflategate any day now....

The form of apology that I'd prefer is a high round draft pick from the Jets for tampering with Revis.

The Pats approach to free agency reminds me of the grandmother that sends you $5 for your birthday with a note to get yourself something nice.

Former Patriot Akeem Ayers signs with the Rams
http://blog.masslive.com/patriots/2015/03/report_akeem_ayers_expected_to.html

Pot Roast Knighton signs with the Redskins for one year $4M (seems cheap to me).
Relevant news bc he might have been a replacement for Vince.

I read an article that teams backed away from Pot Roast because he was very out of shape.  Must have been an unacceptable version of big and round.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

Saw rumors of a possible Evan Mathis trade with the Eagles.

Scott Chandler signed today.  Solid TE pickup.

Reggie Bush in for a visit.  He would be a heckuva addition and would fill the Vereen void.

I think Bush would actually be an upgrade from Vereen.
