I wanted to start a thread to acknowledge the great game today from Evan Turner. The guy seems much maligned to me. For the most part people only seem to focus on the stuff he doesn't do. Yes, he turns the ball over too much (he dribbles way too high) and his game has some wrinkles, but I am impressed with a lot of the things he does on the court. He has done an excellent job holding the fort at point. His brings a couple of skills to the table that none of our other players do and I was happy for him to get his first career triple double today.

i'm happy for him. but ultimately this guy is a borderline starter....i'm sick of mediocrity and us embracing it...like when we re-sign Brandon Bass this summer.

Seriously, I am not sure what kind of future does he have with us. The rotation at PG is set. The one at SG is over-crowded with Avery, Smart and Young getting minutes.

I am not sure he is best at SF and we already have a back-up quality one there - Crowder, and a developing one - Young.

I'd like to find a place for Turner in the future rotation, but I can't.

With the current tiny-ball trend, maybe at PF? Lets see:

Sully, Oly, Jerebko or Bass, some Crowder minutes. No, no place there either.

This team is cute in a strange way but no way Danny resigns Bass, Jerebko, Turner and Crowder + 2/3/4 rookies. Some tough "Farewell to thee" will be spoken in the summer.

Against a Knicks team that has no credible SF to challenge him. He's a SG who's forced to play SF on our team now due to roster issues. Having Smart/Thomas/Bradley forces him to the 3 more often now just to get him minutes.

Evan Turner is Paul Pierce, except that he can't shoot as well, and hasn't quite figured out how to get to the line as frequently.  And he won't ever be Paul Pierce.  But Turner can fill a lot of roles on the offense, which is useful.  If he were a baseball player, he'd be a utility player who can field 5 positions, but who is currently starting as a regular in just one because of team needs.  If he can learn to even get to the line more frequently, I think he becomes a viable starter on a good team.  His shooting for his career has been consistently mediocre, and I don't see that changing, which is what he'd need to improve to become a star.

Turner is signed through next season.  While he could be traded (this is Ainge we're talking about, so I can't ignore it), it is more likely than not he'll be around for a second year, at a relative bargain of $3.4 million.

I don't know what his future is on the Celtics, but there is something to say for a player of his versatility.
He scores a bit, he passes, he defends, and he plays hard like he has something to prove, plus he's only 25.

Yes, he turns it over way too much, but he is a good late clock bailout option.

They rebound pretty well, they can both run the offense for themselves and others from the forward position, and Turner's defense isn't much worse than pierce's was early in his career.  You look at Turner and Pierce's age 26 season, and they have the same eFG%. 

I'm saying they have a similar skillset, except Paul was an amazingly good scorer for someone with a diverse skillset, which is why he's a superstar and Evan Turner is a role player.  And I'm also saying that I feel the area Turner could best improve his game is at earning free throws -- if he gets to the line more frequently, his scoring becomes much more efficient.

Also, shooting from 10-16 feet (Pierce's elbow jumper), Turner has done just as well this year as Pierce ever did.  That's actually the one shot he's decent at.

I think Turner needs to focus on low point total triple-doubles, like last night's. The added rebounding was huge. We don't really need him scoring more than 10-12 a game. Limited shots too. He has got to realize he is not a good shooter.

Also, I noticed he does not fill fast break lanes well. If Isaiah or Smart get the ball, fill a lane and run hard. He seems to linger in the backcourt hoping to get his hands on the ball.

But to the original point, he played well last night!
