Hi everyone thought I'd post some grades and thoughts on each player so far this season.

Smart, B-, Was all 3 and D at the start of the year and the 3 wasn't falling. Things changed as his overall game is picking up and he is starting. Nice progress needs to still improve more.

Turner, B, He hasn't improved his game from last year. He has however showed more willingness to pass and work with his team mates. So his approach is better. He has been a good signing.

Bradley, C+, his productivity has dropped and he is taking some heavily contested shots I don't approve of. Some games he is decent others just bad. Disappointed especially after he just got paid.

Thornton, B, comes to work and does his thing. Has been a good addition to the roster.

Young, C+, Has looked better than expected given his age and very limited PT. Seems to play very calm and cool.

Prince, B-, another good trade pick up. Has played his role very well so far and likely has interest from a few clubs.

Crowder, C, sometimes he looks good and others like a liability. Pretty much a low profile role player getting a good amount of minutes. At least he always hustles.

Bass, B, a pro who does his job. Good rotation big that has been pretty aggressive attacking the rim this year.

Sully, B, struggled at times and looked pretty good in others. Seems to have been benched for poor plays and attitudes for stretches on a few occasions. Still a tick of improvement has been made by Sully.

KO, C+, still trying to find his groove. Injury time also has to hurt his progress. He did a lot of work to come in at better shape hope the injury doesn't set him back.

Zeller, B+, he has been a surprise. Good finisher and not as much of a defensive liability as I believed when he was traded for.

CBS, C+, Has got his guys to play well but no one has really taken off. Lineups are still in flux. Game plans also seem to be too dictated by other teams. Maybe its the roster trades or roster talent.

Marcus Smart - B - He's been a competitor, but it would be good to see his efficiency go up.  He totally looks like he has a lot of room to grow and his ceiling is looking very high.  Here's hoping for the second half, he's easily my favorite Celtic right now.

Jae Crowder - B - His offense comes and goes but he's a decent competitor.  He could be a good backup SF going forward if we put a real team together

Sully - B+ - He's been pretty good, probably our best player right now

Marcus Thorton - A- - He's the anti-Bogans.  Most players would chafe at coming off the bench on a lottery team that they have no future with, but he's been a good mentor and is giving it his all every game.

Kylynk - C+ - If he played at his best every game he'd be a great 6th man, but he has had two major slumps.  Hopefully he doesn't go Jeff Green on us.

Bradley - C+ - his offense seems better considering who his teammates are and what is required of him, but it's still a lot of mid range jumpers.  His defense seems to have fallen off.  He's pretty boring to watch, too.

Bass - B- - I would like to grade him lower, but that would be dishonest.  If he had different hands and had grown two more inches he would have been so much better.  I like his effort though and he's probably a good influence on the kids.

Zeller - A- - A surprise.  I would like him as a backup center moving forward

Wallace - A - I would like him as an assistant coach

James Young - B- - He has potential and needs more minutes.

Prince - B- - He's been working hard and is a good, savvy mentor for the kids.  He did win us that game though which hurt our pick standings, so that dropped him from a B to a B-

Coach Brad Stevens - B+ - He needs to get his rotations down, but he's been giving Smart minutes and has kept the team motivated in a throwaway season, so props for that.  He seems to be developing the kids pretty nicely.

I agree with this post

Wallace has been a surprise (in that he's not complaining, and playing hard when he's in)

Stevens has been pretty darn good especially with the talent around him
I trust Danny Ainge

Stevens - B+

He's shown steady growth, and more importantly / impressively he's managed not to lose the team despite all the roster shakeups.  He's emerging as the primary leader of this team, the person who gives the team its identity.  That's a great sign.

Ainge - A-

I'm so glad he pulled the trigger and traded Rondo.  I was concerned he would wait out this year to do that.  Disappointed he didn't get more in return for him, but it's not all that surprising.  Rondo has been a shadow of his former self since returning from his injury.  The trade for Zeller and Thornton this past summer has turned out really well so far for the Celtics.  Ainge also got some decent assets by flipping Green, Wright, and Nelson.

Overall, I feel that Ainge has renewed his reputation as one of the best GMs in the league.  I feel good with the team in his hands.

Smart - B

Hasn't wowed me too much, but I like what I see.  Really hope he develops more of an in-between game.

Bradley - C+

Hasn't shown any improvement over last year, which is concerning given his new contract.  He hasn't been terrible, but he continues to look miscast as a starting SG with a significant offensive role.

Crowder - B

I like what I see here.  He's a Matt Barnes / Demarre Carroll style player, only his lack of ideal size limits him somewhat.  He's better than Renaldo Balkman and Chris Johnson, at least.  Every good team needs a player like Crowder, though, and keeping him should not cost much.

Sullinger - B+

Hasn't shown a lot of improvement over last year, but has looked mostly solid.  His outside shooting was up a lot to start the season but he's gone cold again for the last couple of months.  Right now he's the best player on the team, but I'm not sure he's the type of player you go out of your way to keep around as a core piece.  That says more about where the team is at than it does about Sullinger.  He's a nice player.  The criticism about his weight and his shot selection is generally uninformed and hyperbolic.

Olynyk - B-

Looked good at the start of the year, but has tailed off since.  Just can't seem to find a consistent role or rhythm on the floor for more than a week or two at a time.  The latest injury obviously isn't helping.  At various times I've been optimistic that he could become a productive offensive-minded starter, but at other times I think maybe he's just a 4th big who can stretch the floor and has some nifty moves inside against weak defenders.

Turner - B

This is a better grade than I would have expected to give ET before the season started.  He hasn't been awful.  In fact, he's been an OK piece.  One I'd prefer to see on the bench, but still.  You can use a guy with his playmaking ability and size that allows him to play and cover three positions (not very well, but still).  I don't much care if he stays or goes, though.

Zeller - A

He's better than I expected.  There's not much more to it than that.  He's just a solid player who won't often wow you, but will rarely disappoint you, either.  I hope we can hold onto him for a while and find another productive center to split minutes with him.  He could be part of a very productive tandem at center, ideally as the backup.

Young - INC

Really haven't seen enough.  Is he J.R. Smith without the headcase issues, or is he Daequan Cook?

Pressey - C

I'm fine with him as the third string point guard, but he's totally expendable if the Celtics draft a guy with more ideal size and any kind of rotation-caliber upside.

Bass, Thornton, Prince, Wallace - B

All the credit in the world for staying engaged and not causing trouble as veterans on a team headed nowhere.  These guys have been exactly the kind of veteran presence the younger guys need.  That said, I won't feel much of anything whenever it is that they head elsewhere.

I do hope to see Bass get an opportunity play a significant role on a good team, though.  He deserves it.

Stevens - C

he's got the team playing hard but hasn't shown much improvement in rotations or player development.  not happy with the overall philosophy of chucking jumpers, particularly by Sully.    not seeing any improvement in defense yet either.

Ainge - B+

wanted to keep Rondo but failing that, I would have liked to have seen a better return for him and for Green.  doing a really good job churning existing assets into more/better assets.

Smart - C

very good D.  offense is worse than I expected.  ballhandling and passing leave me questioning him as a starting-caliber PG

Bradley - C-

no improvement this year.  actually looks to have regressed on D.

Crowder - B

decent hustle guy off the bench.  better than I expected but replaceable

Sullinger - B+

could quote Phosita here with a slight change
Has shown a lot of improvement over last year.   Right now he's the best player on the team, but I'm not sure he's the type of player you go out of your way to keep around as a core piece.  That says more about where the team is at than it does about Sullinger.  He's a nice player.  The criticism about his weight and his shot selection is generally uninformed and hyperbolic.

Olynyk - C+

Phosita nailed it here too:

Turner - B-

better all-around player than I expected but not as good as I had hoped.  best skill is getting open for a mid-range shot and making it.  mini-PP in that regard.  his ball-handling is not good enough to be the starting PG and to be fair it's not his natural position.

Zeller - B+

better than I expected.  he's not what I would consider a starting-quality center but a very solid looking backup.  great get by Danny as a salary dump

Young - INC

needs more time on the court to see what he's got.  like what I see in those limited moments.

Pressey - C

does as much as he can in the limited minutes he gets.  was hoping he'd develop more but considering he was undrafted, complaining would seem silly.

Bass - C

plays hard but he is what he is -- a role player that would excel against other role players, not starters

Thornton - B-

much better than I expected but I did have low expectations.  can be a lights-out shooter and he does at least try on D.  doesn't always succeed but he makes an effort.

Prince - B

better than I expected -- actually shows he has something left in the tank when I thought he was complete toast.  seems to provide a really good influence on the team since arriving

Wallace - D
doesn't provide a lot when on the court except hustle at this point.  doesn't complain which is a good thing but if I was making that kind of money just to have front court seats to all the games, I wouldn't complain either.

How is the criticism on Sullinger's weight uninformed?

Pho,

watch the pre-game and during game ads for C's games.  The ones where they advertise the next game on Comcast.  Probably took the photos on Media day.  Look at the Sully one, he has put on at least 20lbs since training camp....

Smart: B- Making strides, needs to develop a game in the paint. His defense will be his calling card. Needs to take a few more steps before he can be called a point guard.

Turner: B So far the only position he hasn't played is center and head coach. Unless you get something big for him he is a keeper for the immediate future, cheap, works hard, can get his shot off in or out of the paint.

Bradley: B- He's up and down with his shot, and needs to develop other parts of his offensive game, but he works hard on both ends, still a way above average defender.

Thornton: B He does what he's asked to do, shoot and score, his D is actually not bad. If we can't unload him, he has a bit of value on this team. But certainly over paid.

Sully: C+ He has talent on the offensive end, he can do many positive things. He is a minus on defense, can't move his feet worth a dam, never mind leap. And crap or get off the pot with conditioning.

Young: C I just haven't seen enough of his game, he goes to the D-league and tears it up. Lets not forget Pressey scored 34 in the D-League. Has a ton of potential.

Crowder: C+ Hard worker, excellent defender, has trouble scoring with any consistency. Young and nice to have around.

Bass: B I like Bass, he's really developed his game in the last 2 years, he needs to work harder on D. And should be traded to a contender.

KO: C- Sorry gang, Kelly still looks lost on D, too much of the time, I can see him having a spot as a 6th or 7th guy off the bench, but unless he improves his Defensive value, he may have to be a casualty.

Zeller: B Too soft on D and not aggressive enough, but he's turned into a nice guy to have around on the offensive side, where he still has more of an upside. Nice backup for a good center. A steal!

Prince: B This guy can help a playoff bound team, still crafty and still has game.

CBS:B So far so good, he's not a motivator, he has his own style reinforcement. Good choice for this team, until we see him with more talent.

...I forgot Pressey, sorry Phil

If Pressey could hit the 3 with regularity and develop a floater in the lane. He would be this teams best floor general/passer. He gets this team really moving.

i'm giving the team as a whole a D. we have a chance at the playoffs but not because it's on the shoulders of Sully, Smart & Kelly. it's because guys like Prince, Bass and Turner are logging big mins. or playing in crunch time.

I understand you don't want to just play the young guys with out them earning it. but let's also not go awarding a bunch of veterans that aren't going to be here next yr. or the yr. after.

if we were making the playoffs with Young, Smart, Kelly having bigger roles that's progress. this is a bunch of kids watching the adults play.
