Considering the number of picks we own, or will own by this time after the trading deadline, we almost have to look closely at European players who could stay overseas for a couple more years.

If we made a promise to him later in the draft and he shutdown workouts and threatened to stay in Europe, we could end up with a good value.

I'll be very surprised if Ainge drafts Hezonja or Porzingis.  Just doesn't seem to be his MO to go after the foreign guys, at least not in the first round.
PM boris badenov. he did a pretty good study that dismisses this commonly held belief.

on herzonja, all i know comes from draft express. the guy seems enormously talented. no doubt about his basketball ability. the big red flag is his attitude. they repeatedly mention that he is arrogant and doesn't seem to play team ball well.

who knows if this is accurate or curable.

Yeah honestly there are usually like 1 or 2 per draft, it's not like it's half Euro guys and he always shies away.  They're just not usually there when we're drafting.  Porzingis and Hezonja look dope

I recall the post, and with respect to Badenov (I think most of his posts are great), I didn't really buy his conclusions.

Ainge seems to do his due diligence, but I think when it comes down to it he trusts his scouting and instincts better with domestic players.

That doesn't always work saric wanted to only be drafted by the Celtics and lakers and said he would only come out to the nba straight away if they drafted them

But 76ers trying to stockpile talent just went ahead and drafted him

I think if they are there and they are the bpa available we should take them
Regardless of being international

I have hezonja as 3rd best SF behind Johnson and oubre

Porzingis is 3rd best front court player behind Okafor and towns

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Ainge is certainly looking for sharpshooters. If we aren't getting a big man then he wants guards and wings that can shoot the 3 ball.

Thing to remember with this kid (especially the attitude questions) is that he's younger than Giannis (turns 20 this month) and shoots 40%+ from 3 point land.He also plays the pick and roll very nicely as the ball handler and I'd say his dribbling skills are one area that he'll need to improve- but he has good fundamentals.
He's 6'8" and other than his lights out shooting his greatest asset is his IQ.
If we want a Spurs style offense with long shooting,  and repetitive penetration then this guy is a very good prospect.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Figures. Danny Ainge, embezzling money from the Celtics by taking a scouting vacation on Wyc's dime.

Ha--I imagine Wyc giving Danny clear instructions not to miss the next Giannis.

Well he scouted Giannis too and he still missed out on him.

different story.  CBS needs players that can hit the jump shot. Giannis has a shaky jump shot even today. Poor mechanics and strange finish

This is the reason players like WCS (unless drops to the 20s) won't be drafted  imo

Mario is a deadly shooter, high finish.  Danny usually does not draft euros but this guy will be watched closely. Especially if we draft 10-14 but Danny feels he is a top 5 talent

Ya I agree with this sentiment. Even though I wanted us to draft Giannis I don't feel that we necessarily "missed" on him since he probably wouldn't have been a good fit for the system.

Hezonja  is definitely more of a Stevens prospect, particularly since Stevens has a reverence for Pop who has always argued for the skill and work ethic of European players.

Mario is a sg but if he bulks up could play some sf.   Be like a nic batum

Intense player and will fit with this group

So this is more of a CBA question, but relevant here....if we were to draft and stash Hezonja- even if just for a year - or to use another example, when Saric comes and plays for the Sixers, is their first year here treated like year one of the rookie contract? Or does year one start from the draft year, so that if Saric plays in the US next year he'd be considered a second year player for contract purposes?

DX has moved him up to 6th, by the way.

First Stanley Johnson then Russell and now, seemingly, this kid. Every time I start to get excited about someone, our record gets better, or the kid moves up in the mocks to put him out of reach.

I'll probably end the season having to convince myself that Frank Kaminsky is something other than the second coming of Brad Lohaus.

Ainge was in Europe to scout Giannis, a lot of good that did.

Word last year that Ainge Loved Porzingis and would have taken him had he remained in the draft.  I hope we figure out a way to get him; my second favorite player after Okafor, who is going to kill in the NBA.
