So the latest news on Ray Allen is that he will make a decision on which team he wants to play for after the all star break, and if he does play, would most likely go to Atlanta or Cleveland (at least according to Lebron fan boy Brian Windhorst).

Does anyone else continue to lose respect for Allen each year? I was trying to think of other hall of fame players that finished their career this way. I know Shaq comes to mind because he really bounced around at the ends of his career (sun, cavs, celtics in last 3 seasons), however even he didn't sit out half a season and then try to sign with a team that had the best record.
I can remember Karl Malone toyed with the idea of playing half a season with his hometown spurs, but ultimately didn't. Can anyone else remember a hall of fame player doing this routine?

Obviously, he can do whatever he wants with his career. I just don't really get the point or thought process. For what it is worth, I do think he would help the Hawks because thabo is injured, but is probably a poor use of a roster spot for the Cavs. They already have essentially 3 wasted roster spots on Lebron's friends that like to shoot 3's (James Jones, Miller and Marion).  Allen would be really redundant and would prevent them from signing a backup big or insurance if either Mosgav or Thompson were to have any sort of injury.

It's not much different from "Big Shot Bob" Horry, and in Ray Allen's case, why wouldn't he do this? If all he wants is championships than good for him.

Wholeheartedly agree. I think waiting half a season then picking a team definitely looks bad for him.

However, I'm biased. I've never liked Ray since he got his panties in a bunch about Bradley starting over him, and he left town for less money and less years to chase a ring on the backs of Miami's Big 3.

Michael Jorden?

This is tough to respond to because you give no context to explain how it is related to the topic at hand.

If you are saying Michael Jordan came back halfway through a season, he did, but it was to play for his original team where he had spent his whole career. He did not wait halfway through a season to determine which team had the best record and decide to sign with them. He also was clearly the best player on the team when he came back as opposed to a role player that could hit 3 pointers.

If you are referring to his time with the wizards, I don't think anyone would argue he was chasing a ring in those situations.

In just about any way, comparing ray allen to jordan is a huge insult to jordan.

RA helping to defeat the Cavs in the playoffs sounds neat.

I personally don't care if Ray Allen goes to play for the Timbuktu Titans, LOL...I'm still grateful for everything he did in Green.

And he did a LOT:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RciLe9SUqVM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i19lSd7pAiE

Not just on the court...his community service projects in BOS...his MOM sitting in the stands, cheering her son AND the team on...

The above pic was PRICELESS...Pierce, Ray and BOS had just came back and beaten NY "IN" NY, again..I think this was the game where both Pierce and Ray Ray went for 32 apiece.

Thanks for the memories, Ray...I don't care where he ends up.

One of the best clutch shooters of all time...among the best shooters of all time PERIOD. :)

There are some pretty big differences.

1) Horry was never even an all star, he went from a starter to a reserve over the course of his career, but had a pretty natural career act

2) As best I can remember, Horry never sat out half a season and decided to sign with the best team after the all star break. He chose contending teams before the season, but that is pretty common for players, particularly at the end of their career.

3) Horry played for 4 teams in his entire career, and one of them was for a half a season where he did not fit in under danny ainge. If allen signs with someone it will be his 5th team and 3rd in the last 3. Again this is not amazingly unique for a role player, but for an all star/hall of famer it is.

None of this really matters in the big scheme of things, just think it is kind of pathetic that Ray Allen has gone in a lot of people's eyes from a consummate professional to a NBA vagabond chasing rings.

I really disliked what RA did when he left the C's -- to take a significant pay cut to play for the team that just knocked your own team out of the playoffs.  That was bad and unforgivable.   However, his current thing doesn't make me think any worse of him.  At this point he's just playing out whatever value he has left.  As long as he doesn't help the Clips win games, I'm indifferent.

Easy -- Gary Payton.

Those two are not opposites in the slightest, and it is simply projection to think otherwise -- particularly because it implies loyalty to employers for... well, for what reason, exactly?

Free Agent wants to sign with championship team is hardly a noteworthy storyline, and Allen doesn't really have a "hometown" franchise to go back to, does he?
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

If it was easy maybe you could have come up with an example that was accurate? Gary Payton never joined a team halfway through a season to chase a ring. Although he did sign with the Lakers and Heat later in his career in hopes of getting a ring, he never sat around half a season waiting to pick the best team. Also for what it is worth Payton hadn't won a ring at that point. Allen already has two, making his behavior more unique. So we can try again, has a hall of famer player ever sat out half a season and then joined the best team after the all star break before as a role player? (I am not saying it hasn't happened, but if it has, it certainly isn't common)

Who retires his number?

I would say the sonics, but they're gone   :'(

Bucks? Maybe. He was there for a few years

Maybe the heat since they even retire other people's numbers (what a joke)

Definitely not us. Unless we invite him to retire his number.... But then KG and The Truth show up and hit him over the head with a steel chair!
