with no mentor ,watch some old rondo tapes,he didn't get repetitive  using somtimes muliple small fakes and different speeds and angles, this didn't allow players to time his moves-your pick and roll although nice is becoming a pattern,the ball is passed well but getting kicked and timed-turner has that problem on crossover and around the back and reverses-larry bird another one that set the defense up with an assortment of sublime fakes and passes and hesitations.

He is dealing with the usual Rookie issue of NBA games


Everybody is taller and faster than college .


The challenge to rise above the competition takes a while to figure out.


He 'll need to learn who and when he can take players down low , who to post up ,   How to use his body to protect the ball .

He was much bigger and stronger than 98 % of people he played in college .

He has to develop new skills as you suggest ....to cope with the taller NBA

One thing he lacks that's obvious is a "soft touch ".  ....his normal shooting stroke doesn't lend itself to the little up and soft floater in the lane .  He shoots the ball from behind his head .  He needs a one handed running flip shot .

Marcus has the dunk and three pointer and plain layup going pretty good so far.   He needs shots that float up with arc over the defenders

His normal stroke won't work as release driving the ball .

He needs a whole. New shot while moving in the paint.

I see strides already in passing game .   The soft inside touch will take years of work.

I have seen the floater in recent games and his accuracy is not good.

The shot is there and will be a part of his game, I would speculate he is just rushing it at the moment and once his confidence in spacing down low gets better he will slow it down and make that shot at a respectable clip.

prince has timing  and change of pace  to teach young the art of using screens and timing to get to his spots-this is an art form its not luck that some people get the ball with time-did you see pressey,young and dawkins sitting beside each other on bench-man they looked young

Don't watch Rondo tapes, Smart is actually make perimeter shots and forcing defenses to respect him out there.

His accuracy on that floater is genuinely terrible.

It's encouraging that he's at least trying to drive into the lane more and more though. It used to feel like he was deathly scared of going inside the three-point arc for any reason.

If he does those two things, he'll be a great player one day.

In the meantime, he's well on his way...defense is seemingly the last thing rookies learn in the NBA, and Marcus already has a nose for it.

He'll be fine, just give him time.
