It's tough to tell because of the competition, but I don't see Porzingis having an NBA skill.  Not to be a hater, but...  He's averaging 8 points and 4 rebounds in Spain.  Not a good rebounder.  Not a good first step, unless there are some videos I haven't seen.  Nice jumper for a big guy, but me and KO can both knock down 3's during open gym.  I don't see him being able to create his own shot -- he likes those Dirk fadeaways, but I am not drafting a guy whose game is based on 1-legged fades.  Defensively, he seems like he could develop into a weak side shot blocker somewhere between Brandan Wright and Andris Biedrins.

DraftExpress has him 6, but I think he'll slide barring some evidence to the contrary.

Marcus Smart can shoot! Has your opinion/forecast changed?

Chad Ford  (1:21 PM)

We are talking about a pretty small sample size here. I'm not sure anyone is ready to call Marcus Smart the next Ray Allen. However, where he's really stood out to me is defensively. We knew this during the draft, but it's played out immediately in the NBA. Smart looks like a good bet to win Defensive Player of the Year someday. If he can shoot a respectable 37% or higher from 3? He's going to be an All-Star in the NBA for years.

That 100% definitely doesn't make him an All-Star.  All it does is make him a Bruce Bowen-ish player.

The DPOY thing is kind of ridiculous as well, he's a PG.

Luckily though, Smart might have the potential to be a decent distributor and penetrator as well.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

They never give that award to guards, and probably for good reason.  You'd have to have a pretty special season to even be in the mix.  All-NBA Defense is realistic though.

I hadn't thought of or seen it until now, but would Dennis Johnson be a good comp for Smart? I think DJ was a better shooter, but like Smart never an ultra quick guard. A great defender though. I say all of this never having seen DJ for even 10 seconds of footage from his Sonics days.

... he's shooting 39%/36%/72%... why are people acting like he's Larry Bird or something?  I know the guy is an improvement over Rondo, but ya'll realize there's a player in this league currently shooting 52%/54%/92%, right?

Smart's alright.  Should have a future.  Bit of a bummer we ended up with the 6th pick.  Andrew Wiggins is looking like a superstar already and he's only 19 years old.  This month he's averaging 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.4 steals on a fantastic 48%/39%/86% shooting.  Really wish we had landed a top 3 pick.  But Smart has potential.

Absolutely, and I've made that comp many times.  In his time with the C's, DJ wasn't a great shooter, or at least didn't have great range.  He had LONG arms and was a menace on defense, albeit during an era when defense wasn't quite as serious.  He played a smart, steady, winning brand of basketball.  Always steered the ship in the right direction.  Bird called him "the best player I ever played with".

He was a volume scorer and slasher early on, maybe 20ppg, but morphed into a top-caliber floor general later on.  Just a pure winner.  You can see why the old guys on here get excited about a guy like Smart who just makes winning plays.

All NBA first team defense.

37% from 3pt....

League leader in steals ( the guy gets his hands on so many balls it's crazy )....

Probably average 5-8 assists, at least....

He'll be a legit all star.

Wiggins is averaging 5 points on 2-10 shooting against Marcus Smart.   ;)

Forget the actual numbers, you see improvement every game.  Nobody is claiming Larry, they're just seeing the actual work pay off.

He's just going to get better.

Well, because Ford had some glowing remarks for him, and he's the closest thing we have to a future all-star. It's a Celtics board. There are people here who recently were trying to push the notion that Ben McLemore was a future star, LarBrd33. "Elite shooter", I recall. BTW, McLemore   has regressed to 36% from deep (same as Smart) with more usage as the season's gone on. I haven't seen his name mentioned here lately.

TP. Yeah, my notion of what DJ was like was great defender and all around fundamentally solid player. Kinda how I'd describe Smart.

Good read.

It appears the tiers this year are 1-3 and 4-12. Chad breaks those ones well.

Then we have another tier of 12 - 20 something - Kaminsky, Harrell, Dekker, Alexander, Portis - high floor, low ceiling guys.

Yeah, but he says there's no clear #13, then that Winslow isn't better than Hollis-Jefferson.

Wiggins has started every game and played 1317 min.  Leading his team to 7 wins.

Smart has played 573 min.

Wolves have sacrificed wins to fast track Wiggins' development.   Meanwhile in Boston, showcasing Vets.
