Absolutely, and I've made that comp many times. In his time with the C's, DJ wasn't a great shooter, or at least didn't have great range. He had LONG arms and was a menace on defense, albeit during an era when defense wasn't quite as serious. He played a smart, steady, winning brand of basketball. Always steered the ship in the right direction. Bird called him "the best player I ever played with".
He was a volume scorer and slasher early on, maybe 20ppg, but morphed into a top-caliber floor general later on. Just a pure winner. You can see why the old guys on here get excited about a guy like Smart who just makes winning plays.
