Not sure I like the precedent of a charity kinda blackmailing an athlete.  LeBron does a ton for charities already.

Also, I didn't really get the reasoning behind doing the E.

Yup

if it was any other athlete i wouldn't like it.. but the dunk contest stuff with Lebron has gotten kind of ridiculous. He will have his teammates filming him doing crazy dunks during practice and have it "leaked" on to the internet.

In 2009 he announced he would do the 2010 contest, then backed out last moment.

He also waffled back and forth in 2011 and 2012. There is actually a whole story devoted to it

He always says he is doing things for his "fans" and cares about his fans, but has the opportunity to do something a lot of people have asked that really doesn't have much of a risk at all (unlike the home run derby, there has really never been a statement that doing a dunk contest injures someone's game or hurt them in the second half) .

Hope this thing takes off, i will probably donate myself.

Haha I love it. It's a fan-driven sport, and obviously the fans want him to do it.

I'm okay if it takes a little blackmail from a charity to get it done  ;D

The only reason he hasn't done it anyways is because he's afraid he'd get beat, which he probably thinks would hurt his legacy. If he enters it his popularity would virtually guarantee he wins it anyways, unless he totally bombed all of his dunks.

What's that about the home run derby?

Some players have said over the years that they do not want to enter the home run derby because doing 90 swings of just trying to hit home runs, plus some practice, can really mess up their swings for normal game play. There is an interesting statistical analysis of the theory here

I am not saying I necessarily buy that, but I have at least heard a number of players say it for a long time. I have definitely never heard a player say that doing a dunk contest messed up their shot for a few games.

Hmmm, that's interesting. TP.

Though I could definitely see Lebron using some sort of excuse like that after coming off the two weeks of rest he needed.

The slam dunk contest is completely irrelevant to me.  I couldn't care less who does or doesn't participate.
