what all the transactions and maneuvers in the last few days has meant, in layman's terms. who goes where, who gets what and how is this all beneficial.

We made two transactions:

We traded one aging, undersized PG who was going to be bought out for another aging, undersized PG who we are buying out. The difference is that the Nelson had an option year for next year, which means 1. he'd be more expensive to buy out and 2. A portion of the buyout would need to hit next year's cap. So the results of this deal give us slightly more cap space next season. Not a major move and not a significant amount of cap space but cap space is an asset and has value and Danny takes slivers of value whenever and wherever he can.

In the second trade we took salary filler acquired from the Green trade and swapped it for different salary filler and a second round pick. Again, nothing major. A second round pick is not a major asset, but it is an asset nonetheless and it's basically a free second round pick.

Also, in the latest Rivers for Randolph move, Ainge was able to absorb Randolph with a small exception (typically of little value) and get a $2.4M exception from sending Rivers to the Clippers.  Now 2.4M is still a small exception but is 2 1/2 times better than the one used for Randolph.  This is something that Ainge has done several times this past year--flipping one or more small exceptions to generate a larger, and potentially, more useful one.  Zeller (and Thornton) are Celtics from the use of the Pierce exception just when it was about to expire.  The Rondo exception was generated by absorbing the returning three players with three smaller exceptions.  It is really quite amazing how Danny has managed to flip small exceptions (which cannot be combined) into larger ones.

It reminded me of playing 2K when my team isn't the best, I just go all out pulling trades.

But seriously, we moved our best players who 1. wouldn't come back and 2. were holding back young players. We received a decent return in additional picks and players who could also be moved.

Now that they traded Nelson and Wright plus bought out Prince, Robinson, and traded Rivers (not to mention what will probably happen to the newest guys) It's clear they are allowing the most possible playing time for the young guys (showcasing?). Either way I like it. Either compete or clear the vets and contracts out and develop the young guys.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Thank you for the input.  I hope Danny does something useful with all his picks and flips and assets and makes it fun to watch Celtic's basketball again in the near future.

To clarify, Randolph was on a minimum salary deal.  There is what is called the minimum-player exception.  NBA teams are unlimited in the number of players they can trade for or sign who have signed minimum-salary contracts (unless they are subject to the hard cap, in which case the minimum player can't put them over that amount).  The Celtics used this excdption twice in the Rivers trade, for both Randolph and CDR, in order to get the full exception for Rivers.  They did not need to use a smaller exception that theyd acquired previously on Randolph -- they still have all of those.

and trade exceptions. basically, nothing earth shaking came about in the past few days. but danny positioned the team a LITTLE better by creating more space and getting more assets. he also did favors for different GMs and that may make it easier to work with them in the future.

no, nothing big happened, but it one more step to rebuilding the team over the next few years. these moves were all about the future, not this season.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I love us watching us good or bad.   I think we all hope he does some thing amazing to get us back in contention but I fear we are 1-2 years out.

This team tries even though it is flawed and bad there have been a lot of close games that we have lost.   I would rather lose by 20 than 2, personally.   But I think this team has been more than ok to watch.

what all the transactions and maneuvers in the last few days has meant, in layman's terms. who goes where, who gets what and how is this all beneficial.

second round picks can be valuable. a few years ago we traded jajuan johnson and etwuan moore, sean williams and a second rounder to houston for courtney lee. the second rounder is what the rockets really wanted as they threw that into the deal that landed them james harden. second rounders are often the icing on the cake that get deals completed so are handy to have.

trade exceptions are valuable too. thats what he got as well as the second rounder for austin rivers. it's what landed us marcus thornton, tyler zeller, and clevelands 2016 first rounder for pretty much nothing (maybe for a second rounder i think).

trading nelson for nate is purely to save money. he doesnt need to pay jameer 2 and a half million dollars next season. wouldn't you make that trade if it meant saving that much money? money that can be spent to put the team over the top in the future were we to make a deep playoff run. plushe bought nate out so maybe he paid nate 1 million to just say to nate "we'll give you this much if you just agree to go away. thats like $3.5 million in savings. and if youre a smart gm you only really want to spend absurd amounts of money if you're going for a championship. if youre rebuilding you just need to meet the league minimum in salary while you're developing your young players. it's the smartest thing to do.

he also cleared out the roster so less players need to see the court so we can have our youngsters play more, and less players on the roster (like buying out nate) allowed him to take on crap two players to match salary in the rivers trade to get us a second rounder.

also, in 2012 during the draft cleveland gave dallas their 1st rounder at 23 i think and two seconds to move up to seventeen in the draft. because he has so many seconds, if danny wanted to in the coming draft he might be able to do the same thing if he wants.

plus, getting rid of jeff, who was most likely going to bolt at the end of the season, for a 1st rounder is brilliant. also jeff could have opted in for the last year of his contract, which would have sucked since that money just burns hole in the pocket of the team if they are really just trying to meet the minimum salary the league sets. wouldn't you want too save 9 or 10 million dollars for when you really need to spend money to put your team over the top during a championship run.

right now danny wants to increase the value of the players he has so they appear more attractive during any trade proposals. jeff has been in the league so long people know what he is. he aint gonna get any better. jae crowder on the other hand will most likely improve and increase in value. keeping jeff would have taken time away on the court for jae to do this. smart move by danny.

I am good with what Danny is doing with the roster and the Celtics have taken a clear direction to rebuild from the
ground up and not try to reload on the fly and compete like the Knicks, Nets, Thunder, Clippers and Cavaliers
have done. Some day, we break out like Golden State, Portland, Atlanta, and Washington have done this season.
The beatings will continue until morale improves
