The Mavs had zero shot before the Rondo trade.  They still have zero shot, though
by adding Rondo they've improved their chances to be a great team next year if they
can add depth in the off-season.  But Dirk is old and if I were the Mavs I'd
address the depth problem now.  And the only way to do it is to give up something, and
the only one that makes sense to give up is Chandler Parsons.

It's sweet that Dallas has such a great offense, but they just can't win on offense alone.

So:  Trade Parsons for a 3rd quality big and a 3 and D player (mainly D)

Rondo
Ellis
Crowder, Rasul Butler (etc)
Dirk, Sully
Chandler, Sully

just as an example (I know not doable), would be better than the current Parsons, Aminu and no good 3rd big.

I wouldn't do the following trade if I were the celtics due to Parson's 3rd year of salary and also because I'm a Sully fan, but what they would benefit from something like:

Parsons and Ledo for Sully, Gerald Wallace and either Evan Turner or the 2015 Philly pick.

Rondo
Ellis
Aminu, Turner, Wallace
Dirk, Sully
Chandler, Sully

Give Aminu big minutes for defense if Wallace is cooked.  Sully can clear space.  Not a big defensive upgrade but they need better quality depth and Sully and Turner and a bit of Wallace would provide it.
Again, I like Sully and wouldn't want to pay Parsons that 14 million two seasons from now.
But maybe a team like the Wizards could take Parsons to back up Pierce (or a Pierce and Seraphin + to Dallas for Parsons deal or along those lines...(doubt the Wiz will trade Pierce though).

Please throw out any ideas where Dallas trades Parsons for a defending wing and a high quality 3rd big.  Glad we can't (and hopefully wouldn't) give them Crowder back!

Edit:  Doubt the Hornets would do it but Dallas needs Kidd-Ghilchrist.  Parsons and Ledo for Ghilchrist and Biyombo or ________ plus ________.

I don't see Dallas giving him one of the league's best 3/D guys for a less talented 3/D guy and a backup big.

Their starting 5 is legit, making your assertion that they 'have no shot' pretty tough to agree with.  With their experience, Dallas will be a force in the playoffs.

Also don't forget about all the buyouts coming up, they represent a far easier path to a deeper bench.

If the Mavs want to get deeper, they should consider trading Rondo for a few role players... preferably ones who can shoot.  It will improve their offensive spacing and bench production.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Maybe we make it a 3 teamer if Phoenix will give up Brandan Wright.

Agreed. People love to go on and on about depth but rotations shorten in the playoffs. They likely sign Jermaine O'Neal, and bring in some guys via 10-day contracts, and trying to get a buyout guy like Tayshaun Prince. I don't see the point in giving up a key guy for an assortment of lesser talent guys.

I think the only thing Dallas needs, is a reliable backup for Tyson Chandler, other then that, their bench is not the greatest but I think they are fine. Their guard Depth is pretty good imho.

Barea/Harris/Aminu/Jefferson/Charlie V...thats not the worst thing in the world.

like others mentioned, they can try to find a backup C without giving up anyone of their starting 5

The Mavs have no shot of coming out of the West. On the one hand, I admire the work Nelson has done to stay 'competitive' the past few seasons, and Dirk's willingness to sacrifice financially. On the other, you have to wonder what they're long term prospects look like -- no chance for a title, no young building blocks, etc. At least they can sell FAs on playing for a good franchise in a good city (with no state income tax).

This post, agreed.

Dallas doesn't have to sacrifice anything, especially out of that potent starting 5. That lineup there, especially in a PLAYOFF ENVIRONMENT where the rotations are MUCH shorter will be fine.

Jermaine O'Neal evidently lives in DAL, now..played well for GSW last year, and has played with Rondo in BOS. If DAL can grab him they'll solve their backup big issue.

Chandler Parsons is young, talented, and big enough to play spot minutes at the 4 for Dirk.

DAL is going to surprise some ppl, just watch.

Rondo's addition to DAL is going to prove to some people that he is legit, and The Man:
