I know, you think this is a post dedicated to Austin Rivers, again!!!  wrong, this is a post about a guy, who after watching him last night and after listening to how badly we needed him at the time was truly over rated.  I wouldn't give you two cents for... Omer Asik!!!  what a bum. and to think of how many people were yammering that we should make a deal, makes me laugh!!!  this guy isn't even close to being as good as Olynyk or Zeller.  last night he looked like his feet were nailed to the floor and couldn't even out jump Sully.  Asik my Assik!!!

I thought this all along. Thank God we did not trade for him.

Who over rated Asik? He is a defensive specialist, who is a good rebounder, and can score some points. A little flat footed, but a solid rim protector. I don't think anyone sees him as more than a good piece next to a great player. He is the perfect guy to have next to Anthony Davis.

Its just too bad that the rest of the team is not better balanced around Davis. Eric Gordon? Tyreke Evans? They need to make some moves and get another good foundation piece and role players that are balanced with Davis, Jrue, and Asik. They need a solid 3 and D guy, and another solid offensive player who drives to the rim, and can play off the ball.

They are just an unbalanced team. If Davis was not the (arguably) best player in the league right now, they would be far worse than a .500(ish) team (as a western conference team. If they were in the east they would probably be well over a .500 team).

I've always thought Asik was overrated by some on this board. I got the feeling that people thought a trade for Asik would solidify the roster and be the end of all our problems. He's a solid defensive center who can rebound but is limited offensively. I think that if we had dealt for him we would have been forced to overpay him this offseason since we have no one else, and people would be complaining about his limitations because he's just a complementary guy, albeit one that plays an important position.

Oh yeah, before Asik it was Gortat.

While it's true that some people were very insistent on getting him in Celtics green, Asik is still a better player than Olynyk and Zeller.

This^

Asik is not a superstar but he's very, very good at what he does.  He grabbed 12 rebounds in just 24 minutes in last night's game.  Davis, of course, was a monster that we couldn't stop.  And Anderson, despite having a quiet game last night, is a nice offensive complement to Asik's defense - as a threesome, that's a hell of a front court.

The problem with that team is the guards - Holliday, Gordon & Evans basically gave the game away.

That's got to be very frustrating for Davis.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

So, then who did we have at the time,  that made him right for us???

At the time we were hoping to land Kevin Love, whose lackadaisical defense would have been covered by Asik. We had Rondo and Green. And we had Avery Bradley. That probably would have gotten us into the 4th or 5th seed of the playoffs in the East behind Toronto, Atlanta, Chicago, and maybe Washington.

But once that trade did not go through, he really wasn't that good for us.  But the question was who is overrated, not who is right for us. I am just saying that he isn't overrated so much as he fills a certain need very well, and is perfect for the team he is on. It is just unfortunate that the team has not put the right complimentary player around Davis.

Another overrated player I think is Monroe, Sanders until his recent collapse, and Rudy Gay also comes to mind.

Not to make excuses, but Asik is playing with a bad back as reported, he has for most of the year. But even so, he's not the defensive presence I thought he would be. But he's better than what we have now. He grabs 9-10 rebounds a game, defends the rim to a lesser degree than I thought he did. He's a grade C plus center.

When I saw Varejao this year is was shocked, he's a shell of the active energetic player I saw 5 years ago. Injuries and age have really taken a toll on him.

Larry Sanders is not having a real good year in Milwaukee, in fact he not starting anymore. He's over paid and under performing.

The other thing is, Asik will be 29 next year. He fits better with a team attempting to win now. Since we're 100% rebuilding now it makes no sense to go for him.

The Pelicans can justify paying Asik big money because they have Davis next to him. Without a dynamic PF next to Asik, Asik's shortcomings become more glaring. A Sullinger/Asik frontcourt would not have been good enough to play with the big boys.
