Since the Knicks' 2016 first-round pick is going to either Denver or Toronto, this trade can't be made.  You would have to wait until draft day and make a deal where you tell NY who to take and receive his draft rights in a trade.  Thornton would not be tradeable at that point.

Incorrect on both counts. We're giving them a 1st rd pick this year (next year too for that matter), so the trade would be valid. Thornton can be traded, just not part of a package with another player. Hence as to why Sullinger is part of a deal, using the TPE, independent from it.

It might be worth trying to do trade somewhat like this one on draft day.

Swap lottery picks and take back Calderon's salary in order to get the better pick.

Boston moves up in the draft and gets a chance at the better prospect. Lose some cap space but FAs are not likely for Boston at this point anyway. So better pick more valuable than cap space. New York gets worse pick but still gets a good prospect to work with and more cap space to spend this summer. Win-win.

If the Knicks were to be compensated with any of our guaranteed firsts(not Dallas or Cleveland's) from '15 or '16, the deal would work I believe. But if Jackson agreed to trade a shot at Mudiay or Okafor simply to move Calderon's remaining salary and that pu pu platter of picks, I think it would be a worse decision than anything Isaiah, Billy King, Prokhorov or Dolan have ever been a part of.

Edit: Well, the Curry trade was bad and trading the pick that became Lillard for Wallace was a catastrophy, but I think this deal could stand there with them.

I wouldn't rule out this happening in some capacity on draft night. If the Celtics are sitting at #4 in the draft, and Knicks are sitting at #1 or #2, it is possible that the Celtics would Draft Stein (Center), send him to the Knicks with the 2016 Cavs pick, possibly another player, and get Okafor or Towns & Jose Calderon (could eventually become another asset--if he plays good and elevates his trade value, or when he becomes an expiring contract).

To trade up to land a guy like Okafor or Towns we most likely have to part with players like Sully or Olynyk as well.

I think Phil Jackson would be an idiot to trade the 1st or 2nd pick pick of the draft for anything short of a star player (Demarcus Cousins?)

Also, if the Knicks want to get rid of Calderon, they could just use stretch provision on him.

Sorry, I missed that you were doing something moronic like giving the Knicks any picks.

This trade would stand no chance unless the Knicks pick were protected
for the top 2 picks, or maybe top 3.

Would the Celtics still do it if the NY pick were top 3 protected?  I'm inclined to say no
unless Danny is really in love with one particular guy that he could grab at #4.

It makes the trade a lot closer.  There is some chance the Celtics come out a loser then, but you probably still do it.  The Knicks are gonna suck again next year.

If Detroit starts winning some more and gets into the 7th or 8th spot in the East, would they have any interest in Thornton?

Maybe we could get a 2nd rounder out of the deal.

Boston
Calderon
2015 1st rd pick

Why for us?
The Knicks currently have the worst record in the league, so this pick at the very worst, should they remain in last place, would be a #4 pick.

Calderon, despite his contract, does provide us with a veteran presence, shooting, and a player that Smart can learn from.

New York
Thornton (expiring)
2015 1st rd pick (LAC)
2016 1st rd pick (CLE)
The two Minnesota 2nd rd picks
Sullinger (this would have to be done separately, in which they absorb him via a TPE)

Why for NY?
The Knicks are desperate to get out of Calderon's salary and by doing so, it would allow them to sign 2 impact players in free agency.

Having a top pick is great, but Melo is turning 31 this season and I doubt Jackson has the patience to have that player develop.

Sullinger looks like a very good fit in the triangle and he's still on a very cost friendly deal.

The Knicks trade away picks by the boatload and this would be a good way to add picks back, which provides great roster flexibility with inexpensive rookie contracts.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/12154100/new-york-knicks-trying-trade-jose-calderon-andrea-bargnani

Quote
The New York Knicks are actively trying to trade veterans Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani as part of their ongoing roster clear-out, according to league sources.

Calderon, meanwhile, has no shortage of admirers around the league despite his struggles this season, averaging a mere 9.2 points per game on 40 percent shooting. But the two years left on his contract after this season -- worth $15.1 million -- could make it difficult to move the 33-year-old Spaniard, who arrived in New York in late June as the Knicks' foremost return in the Tyson Chandler deal with Dallas.

The trade with the Cavs netted a 2019 second-round pick and generated two potentially useful trade exceptions worth roughly $6 million ?and $2.5 million. The exceptions could help facilitate additional trades prior to the deadline.

Knicks hang up the phone, they are tanking for a chance at Okafor.

Seems to me Prince might make more sense going back to Detriot. Would give them a starting 3 and leadership if they want to make a 8th seed push.

Error in the trade machine. We cannot reacquire Anthony this season.
