Just a thought.  There are only so many draft picks the Celtics can integrate over the next few years.  If Green, Bass, Bradley etc.. are traded I think the team should ask for picks starting in 2018 or 2019.

Keep the picks coming.

Also a GM may be more willing to part with a pick 3-5 years in the future.

2014 -  Smart
2014 -  Young
2013 -  Olynyk

2015
  total 2 Firsts (max 4); 3 Seconds (max 4)

2016 3 Firsts; 5 Seconds

2017 1 First; 2 Seconds

2018 2 Firsts; 1 Second

true, and ainge has done this already with brooklyn. but another way to achieve this is to take current first round picks and trade them for future picks. for example, if a team has no pick this year and the celtics have 2+ picks, trade one this year for one in the future. the gamble is that the other team will drop in the standings and their pick will become valuable.

almost like buying lottery tickets.  ;D
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I agree, though I'm not sure you'll be able to get those picks unprotected, unless there's a team out there that's really desperate. But to the general point I'd also be more inclined to take back a '17-19 pick over a more immediate return.

The further out in the future a pick is, the more risky it is (due to uncertainty). The more risky it is, the less valuable it is.  The less valuable it is, the fewer protections should be on it.  Because we do have so many picks in the next two seasons (13 by my count, which is sort of unfathomable given there are only 15 roster spots), we absolutely should take advantage of this and ask for better picks in far off seasons.  Might as well go fo the 2019-2021 drafts.  Jeff Green to Detroit?  Get back an unprotected first in 2019.  Bass to Charlotte?  We can wait to see what happens in 2021.  Heck, give then each a 2016 2nd rounder to make the price less steep.  Someone wants to dump salary for a couple of seconds?  Make it a 1st in 2020.  There is no reason to acquire any more picks before 2018 at this point.  We have so many picks now that there really isn't any reason we shouldn't control the draft for the next decade if we trade current assets for future ones.

I think DA takes 1st as return in trades no matter what the year.

Obviously he will not draft a player with every pick. Aside from using these picks as assets to trade for a Star I hope he uses them to target prospects. What I mean is come draft day if a player he is really high on is available at #20 and LAC pick is #25 then use assets to move up.
