The tank couldn't shoot.

Yeah, I guess that's my biggest issue with the comparison.  Nelson has been a great outside shooter, and Sherm was a brick-layer.

Career stats.

Jameer NElson 12 ppg 5 assists. 44% 1.3 3's per game. 1 steal.  2 turnovers.
Sherm Douglas 11 ppg 6 assists 48% .3 3's per game, 1 steal, 2 turnovers

nelson takes 3 times more 3's than sherm.  NElson takes 3 attempts per game hence the drop in fg percentage.  Sherm shot the 3 .8 times a game.  Higher fg percentage.

They are the same player.  Different time.  Players shoot more now since they moved the 3 point line.  If Sherm was playing now he'd take 3 a game and make 1.  If Nelson was playing then he'd take 3 floaters a game.

The one 3 a game also adds scoring to jameer and less assists for him when he's not driving the paint as much and taking 3  a game.

The game is different now.  Sherm hit .3 3's a game in .8 attempts.  Same percentage.  HIs fg percentage was higher because he didn't take them and relied on that floater.

Sherm couldn't shoot a lick from the perimeter, but he was a beast inside for a guy his size.  he loved getting in the lane and using that "strong frame" to outmuscle folks.

He was fun to watch.

I think fans as they've gotten older have just become negative nancies.  Sherm's the best.  Jameer is the worst lol.   I feel bad for your kids and what you are doing to them.

Well, they weren't the same percentage.

Nelson:  37.2% 3PT%
Douglas:  26.7% 3PT%

Douglas just wasn't much of a shooter (same thing with his FT%)

I don't think he's half bad. I don't get like that with players though. I'm more rational and will give Jameer his due respect.

Jameer actually is a pretty good player.  He just isn't our savior and fits that rebuilding mode.  We were bad when we had sherm too. Still liked Sherm.

I don't know that I'd characterize "Jameer is actually a pretty good player" as the more rational stance. I don't think he's all that similar to Sherm, although their stats seem to be similar. Not sure if that's what you meant.

I think jameer is a pretty good player by todays standards.  I also think i'm right that the game is just different.  People will compare dirk to bird.  Is Dirk as good as bird? Is LeBron as good as Jordan?  The game was different back then and more refined.   Players shoot the ball more now. If Sherm played now he'd probably shoot the 3 and his percentage would go up from 3, but down in general.  Players back then especially during the 80's fg percentages were much higher because the game was played differently.

I think in general body type and talent considering the league Sherm and Jameer are about the same. Both shorter stocky pgs who play at similar levels.  Both somewhat local college products. Both play for the Celtics during a down time.  Even their stats are similar.  The similarities are there.  It's not really a debate. you can disagree but it really isn't.

But yet people will hate on jameer and loved sherm.  Alrighty then...

I do agree that players get paid more now and aren't necessarily better.  Players are more passive in general and aren't as refined.  The way the game has gone though.

It's a good comparison that way.  I don't think Sherman Douglas would be using that floater nowadays.  That's just not a shot players take.

Similar type players but Sherman was like an inspirational folk hero on that team! He played his heart out. Remember when a reporter told Sherman that gaston the owner said the team stinks? Sherman responded by saying "well we think he stinks" or something like that. Sherman was the man! These days if a player were asked the same question he would probably answer " he's right we do stink so you better trade me to a team with 3 all stars already or I'm taking my ball and going home."

I agree with this. Players now lack that something.  They are making more money but aren't necessarily maximizing their talent.  McHale for example would take any shot he could to put it in the basket.  He didn't care  how he looked.  It wasn't about image or marketing that way.  Players were easier to root for that way. That's the b iggest difference between bird and dirk too.  Just something lacking there with Dirk. His game is not nearly as refined.  He doesn't get the assists etc.  Bird would do what it took to win, and if he had to make that pass at the right time to do it he'd do that.  Lebron and Jordan is the same thing. These guys now are about image and making money moreso.  They are going to make their money taking certain shots and that's it. Mathematically the 3 has kind of become that shot that players just take.  They aren't taking or learning shots like a floater which is a higher percentage shot.  It's 3's and dunks and layups.  There is very little in between. Kind of lazy.  Hard to root for that.

I think by todays standards and compared to the rest of the league Jameer is the same player Sherm was though.  Sherms impact wasn't that great compared to the rest of the league. Neither is Jameer's.  Similar talents. Different styles. But the entire NBA is that way.  It's more a talent league now even moreso where players don't refine their games.

I think it's getting worse too.  People in general want things in an instant nowadays instead of working at it.  They won't even read this post because it's too long lol and they are too lazy and this is what we are teaching people.

Instead the nba is catering to players like that  and having them shoot the 3 instead of improving other aspects of their game.  People are too concerned with metrics and math when they don't even understand how it really applies.

I blame your generation in ways. It's why you have guys like Jeff Green and Rondo who instead of improving their games they just go somewhere else and fans just want to trade tehm instead of doing that because they are just as guilty of what they criticize players like that for.  It's more about the bottom line but talent is being wasted.

The similarities are there.  It's not really a debate. you can disagree but it really isn't.

There are some similarities, but the way they play the game is drastically different.  Generally, when comparing players, people talk about similarities in their playing styles, along with their production.

This. They had similar production, but weren't really similar players.  It's not really a debate. you can disagree but it really isn't.

Jameer's a below average player. And Tony Parker would probably disagree that players don't take floaters anymore, and he probably wouldn't be the only one.

I loved Sherm Douglas.

Same here.  I don't get the Jameer comparison, though.

I think it's pretty accurate. Both short stocky pgs.  Both lack a true role in the NBA.  Jameer Nelson and Sherman Douglas even their names are similar in that they have 2 first names and 4 syllables that could be first or last names..  Both pretty good players that can serve a role and put up some numbers on a bad team. Both are more scorers than pgs  but can do a variety of things and neither plays defense overly.

IF Jameer was playing in the 90's wouldn't surprise me if he was using a floater more due to his height.  Both pretty likeable players imo.
Sherm's role was starting point guard.  He didn't lack a role.

jameer nelson 680 games played.  580 starts.  Sherman Douglas 765 games played.  482 starts.  Some of you need to get your facts straight.  I'm guessing their winning percentage around the league is about the same too and both guys were transitional pgs and played on losing teams and also played roles on some better teams. Their impact on the nba during the time was about the same in other words.

Sherm douglas 27.6 mpg.  Jameer 29 mpg.  Meaning they were both fringe starters that lacked a true role.  They weren't bench players.  They weren't starters their entire careers either. They were borderline starters.

Jameer was actually locked in in Orlando and had more a true role then Sherm there for a good period.  Sherm actually bounced around the league a lot more. Sherm played for 6 different teams.  Jameer has played for 4 different teams so far.  Wouldn't surprise me if that ends up around the same too and his starts go down over time at the end of his career where it ends up similar as well.

Sherm might have had more of a true role when he was here.  But career wise no. Jameer had more of a true role in Orlando.  Different situations. We have Marcus here where Nelson is more just here to supplant him a bit.  Same player.  Different situations.  nelson in Orlando is sherm douglas.

Career wise they are very similar players.  Nearly identical actually. Different timing and situations but as far as talents and their careers they are very similar players.  Just goes to show how irrational fans can be.
