a lot of times Rondo was the best player on the court amongst all of those all-stars and future hall of famers. and yet it still gets overlooked and unappreciated by some C's fans. and imo those people just want to "have their cake and eat it too" and don't really deserve to "witness the greatness" of the next champions that raise a banner here. if their not going to appreciate the ones that brought fourth that championship why do they deserve another? what if there's players in that group that they don't like?
And when everyone expected him to be that player after those all-stars and hall of famers left town, he pulled a quick one and loafed around. I'm so disappointed we traded Paul Pierce because we though Rondo was ready for the heavy lifting.
well, that's your own fault. you put expectations out there for no reason. we had no signs, nothing to go on to indicate that Rondo was like Pierce in that way. sometimes the best player on the court isn't the greatest leader. if anyone should have known it should have been ainge.
well, being a team's best player comes with expectations. being the team's 'captain' comes with expectations. imo, that's reason enough. What often sparks all this polarizing Rondo discussions anyway is that people have these unmet expectations from him.
Rondo is talented but I think he needs to be, at best, the 2nd best player on the floor, which is who he is now in Dallas. The Mavs are still Dirk's team, and Rondo is arguably 3rd behind Ellis. I expect him to flourish with that team.
I agree with you 100%. I think it's the crazy expectation people set for Rondo and some of them are realistic expectations and some are not.
As a captain it's fair to expect your captain to be your best player, to play with consistency, lead by example, and actually give a [dang] every game. I am a big Rondo supporter and still am, but Rondo isn't without his flaws and he deserved the praises as much as the harsh criticism. The biggest annoyance I have with Rondo is he only decides to play like a superstar when the game actually matters, national TV, or against elite super stars like LeBron. Which is fine in some ways because I KNOW we can rely on superstar/shows up for only big games only Rondo when it comes to the playoffs, but it's very very frustrating to watch during the regular season when he decides when to get a triple double or when he posts a meager 4 pts, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists nights as a captain and best player on the team.
Now, with the argument of building around Rondo, my argument was always, yes you can build around Rondo, but you cannot have Rondo as your best player. In today's NBA, you n eed like 2-3 all-stars or even 1-2 superstars at that. Rondo at best SHOULD be your 2nd best player or 3rd best player. So to me, building around Rondo means, finding him a superstar, go-to-scorer (Maybe Melo out of all those elite superstars, is most feasible)
As the above said, Dallas is an EXCELLENT team for Rondo to be on. It is Drik's team, and Rondo is arguably 2nd best if not 3rd best on that team with Ellis.
