To me he looks like he has a PP type body and would be better suited guarding SF rather than trying to stay in front of SG's and chase them around screens . Green is going to be traded most likely, or let go as a free agent . I think we could have his replacement in place already with young . Of course he has a long way to go before that happens, but the kid looks like an elite shooter already . He also played really good defense and was the most consistent and got the most mins in Kentucky's run to the Finals last year .

Really pumped to see him play, let's make it happen already!

Remember Pierce was a SG his first 5-6 years. It's possible with Young the players' strengths/limitations surrounding him will dictate which spot he winds up at.

good points. young may provide the celtics with scoring from either position and his size may let him exploit a number of match ups this way. all to the better.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Sorry, SF.
I hope we see Young get some minutes after we trade Green.  I don't expect Green to be here after the deadline.  Really sounds like he's available to the first team that gives up a protected 1st for him.

To me he has a SG body. His body reminds of Kobe's.

SG or SF, I want him to play along with Mario Hezonja, another SG/SF great shooter. That would be amazing for our future.
It's nice seeing him get exposed as overrated after having argued with fellow fans for years that he was overrated.. but I don't hate him. I'm looking forward to seeing him [...] bounce around to a couple more teams... eventually come back to Boston[...] and helps us as a role player until he runs himself out of the league.

I think that's a very tall order at this stage in the game. Possibly if it's a pick a number of years down the road. More likely to me is a marginal rookie deal player or a 2nd rounder. And I don't think Ainge will take on any meaningful salary in a Green trade.

Regardless on what position he plays, his offense won't change,  we still don't know what position he'd guard better.  Right now with his current strength/body he looks better suited to guard SG's.

But say we are to draft a SF like Stanley Johnson this upcoming draft, than for sure James Young becomes a SG, if we don't than we'll have him keep working in the weight room to add more muscle mass, hoping he becomes strong enough to guard full time in that position.

It's pretty clear and understood that Ainge is making moves with 2 options in mind. His decisions are versatile.

Draft Olynyk a year after Sullinger, Smart with Rondo on his contract year, James Young instead of readier guys like Gary Harris knowing Jeff Green can and most likely will opt out.

It'll take time but he's positioning us in a good way, but it requires patience.

On top of Ainge's youth movement plans, he still retains in the position to trade for a star player, but I don't ever count on that ever happening, those are always extremely rare situation. But if it present itself Ainge will be ready.

Either depending on who's on the floor with him.

As others have said he is a wing player. The way the NBA is now most players technically play more then one position on the floor. This is usually based on defensive assignment. Looking at the current roster. Smart and AB both defend PG and SG, Turner plays PG, SG, SF but only defends SG, SF, Sully, KO, Bass and Wright all play the PF and C. Green plays the SF but defends SG, SF, PF. Versatility is important.

Young said this off-season that his goal is on bulk up to 235lb he weighed 213 at pre draft. Add this to being 6'5 (with out shoes) with a  7' wingspan and 8'8" standing reach (while still recording just shot of 36" vertical) and I think Young will have plenty of size to defend the SF and will defend both positions effectively as he matures as a defender. At his age there is still also a chance that he grows a bit.

I personally would prefer to see the celtics make him defend more SGs at this point in hopes that he becomes efficient enough to start there down the road. With the NBA current trend of playing small I would love to see a celtics team in a few years with Smart and Young in the backcourt and a good sized SF. The nice thing is even if Youngs development stalls he has already shown the skill set to be a 3pt specialist with good size.

Players of comparable size

Kawhi Leonard 6'6" 227lb 7'3" wingspan 8'10 standing reach 32" vert

Jimmy Butler 6'6" 222lb 6'7.5" wingspan 8'5.5" standing reach 39" vert

Klay Thompson 6'5.75" 206lb 6'9" wingspan 8'7.5" standing reach 31.5" vert

Andre Iguadala 6'5.75" 217lb 6'11" wingspan 8'9.5" standing reach 34.5" vert

It's still amazing to me that Butler lasted until 30 in the 3J draft.
