Ainge gave Rondo the chance to be the man, to become a 16+/10/5 pg and  the leader of the team.  Ainge hoped that Rondo would step up his game and cause the young ones to play better as well, especially in the horrible Eastern Conference.

Problem: Rondo isn't a scorer and add to that he is a poor shooter.
Problem: Rondo became a stat stuffer, looking for the triple double every night.
Problem: The team, and the young players were not showing great improvement as evidenced by the W-L record.

In other words, the GM and ownership determined that, unlike Pierce, Rondo was not the piece to build around.

Solution 1: Trade the young players i.e., Sully, KO, Bradley to have a veteran crew for Rondo . That did not work in the summers past.

Solution 2: Trade Rondo and other veterans and commence full blown rebuild.

I personally think the package from Dallas is lacking, but I do not know what else was being offered.

Perkins has been pretty direct in saying Rondo wanted out. That seems significant to me.

Yup - this is from his best friend! Still waiting for all the apologies for Jackie Mac from the Rondo apologists??  I mean, she pretty much nailed it back in August, it's just that nobody wanted to hear it...

that to me is the biggest reason.  I was devastated by the trade but upon hearing this from Perk and another source close to Rondo (can't remember who off the top of my head) it made more sense.  The other stuff mentioned above is just a personal gripe from the sounds of it.

I think if Rondo had an interest in staying he'd probably still be here shooting woes or not.

First off, who the heck ever has apologized to any journalist on any story on this website. We have at various times complained about steven a smith, vecsey, thorpe, woj, jackie, felger and too many others to name. Occasionally some of them have made predictions that came right. Do you think Jackie is sitting on her computer like, man I really hope they apologize for not believing me on celtics blog. I was right!

Second, what is the point of that? Do we need all the people on here to apologize for their false rondo proposals that were better offers?

I don't know why people think Jackie is the greatest thing ever, but asking posters to apologize for not believing her rondo rumor is absurd.

Several posters on this board attacked her and her credibility simply because it was what they didn't want to hear....she nailed the Rondo thing several months ago.  I just think it's funny how everyone crushed her at the time and it's crickets since last Thursday.  I just want to point out that she was right and she deserves credit for it...

I'm part of the Jackie Mac hater during that time, I admit it! I also admit it was something I didn't want to hear as I was attached to all the big 3 and Rondo...scratch that, big 3 + Rondo and Perk...I was also devastated at the Perk trade

I have said this on another thread, and maybe it just starts a battle that it is not worth getting into. She predicted a pretty likely scenario, that rondo would get traded and we would get a poor deal for him. Saying a player on an expiring deal coming off a serious injury for a team with an oddly constructed roster stuck in a weird phase of rebuild would get traded without much return is not exactly predicting the power ball numbers. Just because this, in my opinion, kind of likely scenario played out does not mean she was super plugged in. (then again maybe she was).

I think overall it is disappointing to see her on some garbage shows like pardon the interruption because she has written some really great articles over the years and a lot of times those shows do rely on sensationalizing and exaggeration to draw viewers.

The problem is people off their meds. They rant like they know it all calling reporters names and then they are silent when the report they didn't like turns out correct. There is no talking to these people when they are ranting. They insist so strongly about things they don't know. Since there is no talking to them as they rant, all we are left with is calling them out when we find out the real deal.

The problem isn't these people being wrong. The problem is how insistent they are and their rage.

On the other hand, Perk didn't say anything about August. We don't actually have a timeline on Rondo's feelings. That still requires speculation.

Ainge knew that Rondo isn't worth the max, but was and is getting the max.  So therefore you trade him before you get nothing for him.

I think people get justifiably annoyed with the way some of their journalists pass off their "sources" as facts so frequently, especially on ESPN. They have one reporter that says sources tell them this player wants out or is unhappy. Then ESPN will start citing their own sources to create a world of references based entirely off one crumb of a rumor that may be true. For example shefter say demarco murray may play. Then their ticker and affiliates start citing shefter. It is a game of shells! This could get super off topic, but this may be a contributing factor in a net sports network like fox sports emerging into the market share.

The above, by the way, is a very real phenomenon (although not what happened re: the Mac and PTO, but I think that horse is well and dead). Deadspin did a pretty good breakdown of how it happened a while ago:

Quote
Step 1: Ron Jaworski goes on SportsCenter Wednesday at a little after noon and says something absolutely ridiculous: "I truly believe Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever."

Step 2: SportsCenter replays that clip less than an hour later. "Strong words from Jaws!"

Step 3: A reporter at 49ers camp asks Colin Kaepernick, "Ron Jaworski said today he thought you could be the greatest quarterback of all-time, the best quarterback ever. How do you deal with praise and stuff in this off-season and what not?" That full question—and Kaepernick's response—are later broadcast on SportsCenter.

Step 4: Steve Levy goes on the 11 p.m. SportsCenter and talks about what Jaworski had to say.

Step 5: Steve Young comes on SportsCenter to do a spot on Jaws's opinion.

Step 6: San Francisco's ABC affiliate does a segment dedicated to it. ABC and ESPN are both owned by Disney.

Step 7: SportsCenter replays Jaws's hot take several times overnight. SportsCenter anchor Jonathan Coachman reports that Kaepernick is "humbly appreciative of all this greatest-ever talk." All this greatest-ever talk.

Step 8: The AP writes up a story about Jaworski's take. (So does SI.)

Step 9: ESPN picks up the AP story.

Step 10: ESPN puts the AP story on the front page of ESPN.com with the headline, "Jaworski praises Colin Kaepernick."

Step 11: ESPN Radio's Mike Golic plays the clip and dedicates one of his first segments to it on Thursday morning.

Step 12: A topic for the morning SportsCenter. "Jaws made a little bit of news yesterday!" Jaworski comes on with Adam Schefter to talk about what he said. And then Jaworski says that Kaepernick answered the question—that is, a question from the reporter about Jaworski's take—perfectly.

Step 13: Jaws goes on another edition of SportsCenter. "I'm going to stick to what I said!" he said, laughing hysterically.

Step 14: Jaworski goes on First Take to talk about it with Skip Bayless. "You put it on Tebow," Jaworski tells him.

This is the effect that ESPN has. This is the effect it has on the sports world. Create a meme, report it out, repeat it all day, and let the rest of the media world re-report it, which ESPN then re-re-reports. Wash, rinse, etc.

Some language, because, you know, Deadspin.

The "echo chamber".  ESPN is notorious for it.
