Reading this thread is a great reminder about how a lot of people here have no idea what is happening around the league in terms of team development. If you guys knew what teams are winning with, no one here would be saying nonsensical things like none of our 20-22 year old players have the potential to be franchise cornerstones or that trading our three best young players and five first round picks for a one dimensional star is a good idea. That kind of mentality worked in the NBA back in the mid 00s but the league has already evolved a lot since then. Teams with depth and a good system are seeing far more success now more than ever.

Don't see a single player on this team being a cornerstone of a rebuild. Simply put there isn't one player on the current roster that has franchise cornerstone ability. There's lots of role players and some solid starters but not one talent that you can say: "This is the guy we build around as we head towards our next contending team".

Every player on this team is extremely expendable. This team. IMO, is still looking for its cornerstone
agree with this pretty much except the 'extremely' expendable comment.  to me that means you need to get rid of someone if they're extremely expendable.  I don't think that's the case with anyone on the roster.

been saying all year long (and last year) we have a team of role players.  Only Rondo was a starter-level player-->a player that you'd have a difficult time finding a better replacement or could justify moving to the bench.
Green seems to have progressed a bit this year where I'd consider him a starter-quality but by no means someone I don't think could be replaced to some degree.

everyone else right now is a role player.  if we can move role players for legit starter-quality players, I have no problem with it.  unfortunately we traded our one player of that quality for 3 role players and 2 very late picks

Can you really say smart isn't after playing, what, 11 games?

I fully agree with this. There are no cornerstone quality players on this roster. Ainge has built quite a collection of picks and assets though, it's a matter of cashing them in at the right point for a legit cornerstone player or two.
Agree with both of you.

But what I will say that this team has a solid collection of marginal assets.   Nobody great, but if some team is looking to dump a star for a pu-pu platter of talent, Boston has them.  If someone becomes available like Melo, I imagine a package of Smart + Oly + Sully + 5 first round picks out to get their attention.  That's some nice role players.

That'd be the most depressing move in Celtic history. I can't imagine trading away our strongest assets for a ball-stopper that can not win.

What other stars/superstars could become available within the next year or two?

Despite my exaggeration, I've always thought of him as a franchise killer. He's the Jay Cutler/Tony Romo of bball imo. I'd bet my life he never wins a championship. And I couldn't stand watching him chuck in a Cs uniform for the rest of his career. I'd rather be a bottom dweller than in that sort of agony. Nothing worst than being a fringe team

If I'm Danny Ainge I'm worried about the Celtics looking so dysfunctional and unorganized that they won't be considered by any top flight free agents!

I'd be worried the C's are starting to look like the 76ers. (the team NBA players don't want to play for.)

I would be questioning myself about why I didn't confront Sulky Sullinger in preseason about still being over weight, and lying about be in better condition.

Danny needed to set a tone of pride, on this team and didn't.

This team now reminds me of the team of 1978-79, a few years before Bird and Max, the Celtics brought in an injured Ernie D, we took a shot at Curtis Rowe, and even Marvin Barnes for a few games, anyone that was breathing that once had some talent was given a shot to be a Celtic. Then we drafted Max, Bird, and Kevin, traded for Parish and DJ and convinced Danny to play basketball instead of baseball.

If I were Danny Ainge I would be thinking its time to right the ship and organize who we actually want to keep and who really deserves to be worked with.

that's going to be hard now that KG/ PP and Rondo is gone...the toughness, grit, of that team was amazing and bought celtics pride back to Boston.

Now that all the 08 championship team is gone, we need that ONE guy who wants to take the responsibility to turn the team around and WANTS to be the man

I am still high on Marcus Smart but the past 2-3 games has been frustrating. I have yet to see the driving game he had in college, and aggressiveness he showed. Defense is great, but his offense is below average imo as of now. I hope this is just him being passive or following orders from the coach.

If I m Danny ,

I'm the worst Scrooge you ever seen.

Danny has all the cards to help teams that NEED his help

So make them get down on their hands and knees

Either I'm the clear winner winner chicken dinner or

The other GM can kiss my big ol Giannis    ;D

Ainge definitely needs to acquire a star or at least solid a solid starter that can provide strong veteran leadership.  Preferably during this trade season.  Rondo benefited greatly from his tutelage under the Big 3.
