Avery's defense continues to decline, he's been burned by harden and now Reggie Jackson. He hasn't improved his playmaking or ball handling at all.
I would love to see him try and run some pick and rolls like he did early in the game.

Until then he's not worth his deal.

When needed, he could not stop Kyle Lowry either. I'm not sure if he knows how to play pick and roll defense.

I actually think big defense is a bigger problem than AB right now.  We have no helper in help D.

It takes two players who are on the same page and a good defensive system to play solid pick and role defense, though. The reason why its everywhere is that its very hard to guard.

Had to come out of retirement for this thread...

Avery Bradley:

Awesome High School prospect (1 and 2 with John Wall), subpar year in College, and I thought we stole him in the draft. Then he started to play for us...

In the few years he's been here, he's been injured twice (substantial time), and still has one of the weakest dribbles for either Guard position. In small samples he's a decently average shooter, given the green light to shoot, he is barely average.

Now that he's exerting more effort on offense, I feel like he doesn't like he used to on defense. Marcus Smart threatening his minutes, seems like it motivates him though. Not sure what's up with AB but his "stellar" and much talked about "lock down defense" has been anything but those things.

I was mad at his contract, but then decided 8mil is a decent contract even for a defensive specialist. Especially considering the majority of this forum was at one time willing to give James Posey a 6-7mil/year deal back in the day.

Anyways, before I start ranting... I just want us all to open our eyes, put down the kool-aid and see who Avery Bradley is..

He is a VERY undersized 2 guard (6-2 with sneakers? cmon son...), but not skilled enough to play the 1. He doesnt shoot well enough to deserve to start in my opinion. He is Tony Allen 2.0... only he has a more consistent jump shot.

This team needs to keep Rondo, start Marcus at the 2, and free up minutes for James Young and Turner (yuck cant believe i said Turner).

Package Avery, Bass, and Thornton/Wallace (or exclude the last two) for anything decent.

I think in an idea situation KO should be 6th man and bradley 7th in rotation . We definitely need upgrades at center (rim protector) and SG( go to scorer )

I don't hate Bradley, just think he was overpaid and isn't legit starter. Hate his shot selection . I think coming off the bench would help a lot . He would play against tired starters and bench players without having to worry about picking up fouls from aggressive defense .

Considering Tony Allen is a key cog and spot-starter for a Western Conference contender, Tony Allen 2.0 with a jumper sounds pretty good to me.

Allen is also 6'4 and can guard 3 positions, Bradley can only defend pg's and smaller 2 guards .

Tony Allen shot 40% from three at some point in his career?  Amazing.

You guys and your Avery Bradley can't shoot comments.  It's incredible.  What does he have to shoot for you to say he can?  60% from three?

He is not like Tony Allen.

He is an undersized SG who can play D (not quite as lock down as he was because IMO he is now asked to do a lot on offense) but he can shoot and he cuts very well off ball.  He is a good athlete.

That is Avery Bradley.

i didn't say Bradley can't shoot, I said he has become a chucker and shouldn't be taking more shots than Green, Sully, or KO.  Bradley is a good spot up shooter and cutter, but those are the only shots he should be taking .

I will say that acknowledging that Avery Bradley is not as good a defender as Tony Allen is not (and shouldn't be) a knock on Avery Bradley.

To use an analogy: Most scorers in the league are not as good at scoring as Carmelo Anthony. That doesn't mean they're bad at it.

TP snakehead. Bradley is becoming one of the best shooters at his position. But I guess we shouldn't expect anything else from the fine folks in the CB forum after a few poor shooting nights from Bradley.

Also, rondohondo, you're wrong about Bradley's defense. He can defend PGs and any SG. He's defended Dwyane Wade for us in the ECF back in 2011-12... you know, on the team he provided a defensive spark for that turned it into one of the best defensive squads of the decade (and maybe ever)? He needs a rim protector behind him. As I and others have said in this thread and numerous other threads, you can't play his aggressive style of defense without an athletic shot blocker behind him. He needs bigs that are quick enough to hedge hard and sprint back to the rim.

When you have that combination of Bradley's honey badger D and an athletic shot blocker though, watch out. It can be a deadly combo.

He doesn't take more shots than Green. Getting Sully a number of looks is difficult in the post because it requires a slowed down, grind it out, half court offense that is contradictory to Stevens' run-and-gun MO. KO gets plenty of looks, it is up to him to be more aggressive in converting those looks into shot attempts and hopefully made field goals.

The reality of the situation is that Bradley is continuing to show us that he is one of the best shooters at his position. Even despite a few poor shooting nights stringed together he's managed to post a 45/32 shooting percentage split on a high volume of shots. That's pretty darn good considering there isn't a single teammate around him with the scoring prowess to relieve him of defensive pressure, other than maybe Jeff Green.

Those are two very good offensive players, in Harden's case it'll take more than Bradley to slow him down.
If defense is his calling card, this is not an excuse. He has to be able to guard the top players. Otherwise, he's just an average defensive player with horribly inefficient offence.
This isn't football where you can have a shut down corner. Bradley plays on a team who might have the worse help defense. He has zero help behind him. The weak side defense offers little help. It looks like Bradley is out there on an island every play. If he had any help at all and we could take something away from the ball handler, Bradley would look a lot better.
