There is not a lot of love for Phil on this forum.  But, I agree with you, Pressey might run the club better than Turner.  Maybe Stevens could try him out for short spurt during some of these games and watch how the team reacts.

This forum is wrong.
Pressey is a good backup point guard.

'...if you're in the YMCA league' is how that sentence should be finished. Pressey's a solid third stringer, but not someone you should want on the floor.

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
I think Turner will be just fine. He needs to get his PG rust out. Pressley is consistent. Turner could be great when he gets his head right. I think Stevens can get him to where we all will be happy with him.

Last year the Celtics were a +4.8 with Pressey on the floor.

And what 5 man units was he playing a part of?  In meaningful minutes or garbage time?  How was his output versus the guy he was guarding?  As an individual was he giving up more than he was contributing?

Context helps a lot.

Pressey is a fringe NBA basketball player.  He's a great story but he's hanging on for dear life in the NBA.

Which means exactly nothing. I'll assume you didn't go with your favorite stat -- PER -- because Pressy posted a well-below-average 8.8 last year?

I really like Phil Pressey. I like that he's a Celtic, and I like his game. He is in no way an acceptable backup point guard at this point in his NBA career.

Pressey finished the season ranked fifth among all rookies in both assists and steals per game.

Over the final six games of the season, Pressey averaged 7 points, 8.7 assists, 3 rebounds and 1.3 steals over 29.8 minutes per game. He shot 40 percent from the field during that span. Most impressively, Boston's often-lethargic offense averaged a whopping 110.4 points per 100 possessions with Pressey on the floor during those six games (only offset by Boston's defensive indifference late in the year). In four starts during that six-game span, Pressey averaged 10 points, 11.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2 steals per game.

What is 'small sample size', Trebek?

I will take "Players that are undersized, a defensive liability, and at best a 3rd string player in the NBA with a big heart and lots of hustle" for 200 please Alex.

Shouldn't  the proper answer to this be "When Rondo is on the bench, Smart needs to run the offense so his game can grow'"?

They probably should have locked him up on an AB type of contract after those 6 games.

Yup. And over the entire season - a much larger sample - Pressey was dead last in the league in shooting efficiency (TS%). That's 337th in the league out of 337 players.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics/_/sort/trueShootingPct/order/false/year/2014

As soon as the Celtics are in a position to value maximizing the talent they have on their current roster, Pressey is a goner. As others have said, there's a good chance he's out of the league in short order.

Giving those backup PG minutes to Smart (for his development) or Turner (to maximize his trade value) makes a heck of a lot more sense to me.

+1 .  Most of the guys that bash Pressey are the pro Rondo guys.

Good for BS leaving Pressey in for most the 4th.
