Doc wouldn't have this offense anywhere close to running at the level it is at currently. Stevens may not be there in terms of drawing plays out of timeouts or motivating his guys (??), but his emphasis on statistics and his system is superior to anything Doc had going here. There's no excuse for the putrid offenses Doc had here with the talent he had. He's doing better with the Clippers in terms of offense, but by 2011, Doc was trying too hard to fit circles into squares with how he defined some players' roles.
Stevens has actually spent time trying to develop his players' weaknesses while also forming his system around his players' strengths. Something Doc never did here after 2010 (maybe ever honestly).
So it really depends on what you want out of your team. If you have players that are already developed and have habits that they can't break, then Doc is your guy for the motivation factor. If you want a coach that can create a system that fits your players' strengths while also developing said players, Stevens is probably your guy.
I'm still mad about Doc's emphasis on mid-range shooting while hand waving statistics away if you couldn't tell. Doc slotting Terry into Ray's play calls in 2012-2013 was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen also. He completely took away what made Terry...Terry. Lee completely suffered under Doc because he didn't allow him to create. Lee was much better under Stevens even in limited minutes. In general, the offense was never as good as it should have been. The defense was all Thibs. I know Thibs left, and our defense remained at the top of the league, but that's because the system was already in place with the core players. Kudos to Doc for maintaining the system, but he hasn't been able to teach the Clippers the same defense.
Not to demean Doc, his strategy for player development was a little different. Rondo and Pierce are the main guys Doc "developed". He didn't develop their skills, but he honed their attitudes and approach to the game. As much as I hate to admit it, Pierce was close to becoming one of those annoying volume chuckers after the 03-04 season before Doc reeled him in. Doc really took Rondo under his wing and helped turn his attitude issues around after his rookie year.
