Let's see. Doc won Coach of the Year. Doc won a championship while outcoaching Phil Jackson in the Finals. Doc went to game 7 of another Finals. Doc was the coach of the single largest win-loss turnaround in NBA history. Doc coached what may have been the best defensive team of the last 20 years. Doc is no longer the Celtics coach.

Stevens hasn't won 30 games in the NBA but is the current Celtics head coach.

Obviously the answer is Brad Stevens. ::) ::) ::)

If we win tonight against Dallas I'll pick CBS. :)

After 20 votes we're sitting at an even 50/50 split.

Interesting.

people seem to like Doc Rivers, and he's been effective out of time outs.  He's played under some great coaches, the best ever, and probably has a couple of those plays in his head somewhere.

But it's not like players follow Doc because he adds something that makes a difference in the scoreboard, and it's not why he is considered a top coach now.  Doc won't add points, and nothing he does will really move the needle on a team, I think.

Doc is excellent at gaining buy-in from his players, which is essential to team success.  A team that has the pieces should consider hiring Doc to ensure they perform as expected.

Brad Stevens seems to like the coaching aspect of basketball in the sense that he studies everything looking for a little edge that others might miss.  HE tries to put players in positions where they are most likely to do well.  He is able to figure out what that thing is that each player does well, and incorporates it into the plan.

  • You say when......
I say Brad Stevens is...ANYONE could have coached and WON with the teams Doc had here.....KG ran the team anyway.....it was evident as in everytime KG was out, we lost. Brad plays all....tries new things.....and lets guys work in......Doc would only go with his stars....and man did he run them into the ground. He kept them out there late, even when we were up by 20...!

I disagree with that. didn't del harris fail to make the playoffs with the lakers with essentially the same team phil Jackson won a championship with.

anyway, this is silly. the answer is easily Doc. and i'm basing this on just the pros.

Going off topic but a better coach than both is Popovich.  Pops is like a combination of doc(strategy, buy in) and cbs (ability to develop young players, actually pretty much anybody).

We can only pray CBS will become even 70-80 percent as good as pops is now.

Except when he was in Orlando when he had no stars.  Much like Stevens now.

Or when he was in Boston prior to the formation of the Big Three.

edit: 14-18 Doc in the poll now, but Stevens has spent more time in the lead overall, I think.

Well said.   Not sure there are any available data to support the statement that Stevens is a better NBA coach than Doc Rivers.  But he does seem to have potential.

BS what he did at Butler outweighs what Doc has done in the NBA.

Doc is better right now, but once Stevens starts commanding more respect and has a playoff run under his belt, I think it will ultimately be Stevens.  Doc can rally his players and work the refs on such another level and it's not like he's clueless with his schemes.  He's a smart guy, these forums notwithstanding.

I really do like what I've seen from Stevens though.  During that Houston game, he started Olynyk vs Howard just to test it out, it didn't work so he put Bass in and then Bass had 6 quick points.  That was a nice adjustment.  We are totally outmatched by a few teams because of our weaknesses and Dallas and Houston just happen to be two of those teams.  In a few weeks, I think we'll look a little better.

college is completely different from the pros. Doc hasn't coach college, so all we have to go on is the pros.
