Any chance vs the Mavs?
They went 48 wins last season and have now added Parsons, Tyson Chandler and Jameer Nelson, and Nelson is looking smooth in that pick and roll with Dirk and Tyson.

They are a far superior team to the Rockets and now that we've learned from that Rockets game- it's time to step up and see if we have the focus and discipline to stay with the Mavs through three quarters- and see what happens in the fourth.
I hope this team finds its identity, as Scalabrine suggested they seemed to lose against the Rockets- which is a great point.

What is that identity?
Well, it's what makes the Stevens system so great, similarly to Popovich's schemes on the Spurs, it's an aggressive system based on taking the initiative rather than reacting to your opponents- that way, you're trying not to react to the one or two franchise players every moves, you're trying make them react to you, always one step behind like a poor poker player.
Unfortunately against Houston, our players went into reaction mode very quickly. Be it nerves, or the first game on the road, they produced what can only be described as stage fright + late night in Marcus Smart's home town with airballs, terrible shooting and D-League level defense at multiple stages throughout the night.

-Stick to the three point strategy and open up the paint once a few threes go down.
The idea behind this is to wear out the Mavs early by making Ellis, Dirk and Chandler RUN their asses off in the first 2 quarters trying to defend the perimeter with pinpoint multiple accuracy...at the same time, make sure Sully or Olynyk/Bass get some action in the paint. Sullinger will have Chandler on him and he has dominated Chandler against New York.- let him try and draw a few easy fouls to disjoint the Mavs defense early. The key to our aggressive offense is ball movement from side to side, and as a natural side effect we'll get the wide open three point shots that are crucial to hitting early in the game to get a shooting groove going and take the crowd out of it early, which in turn will turn to room for our wings to attack the basket heading towards the first time out session.

- Focus on defense but don't get rattled early with a few fouls called against us.
- run the pick and roll with Rondo and our bigs.
- put Marcus Smart out there to guard the Mavs pick and roll and experience guarding the pick  and roll against HOF pick n roll opponents. The Mavs are like a pick and roll coach's wet dream.
- Be physical but smart from the onset. Sullinger needs to overpower Tyson Chandler early and get him frustrated- Chandler's a sensitive player psychologically and he's easy to throw off.
- Make Ellis and Parsons shoot the threes and jumpshots early on- just make it the teams job to deny Dirk outside and Chandler on the pick and roll.
- Rebounding will be crucial to making the Mavericks run around and burn out early- without those rebounds we don't have any fast breaks or quick outlet passes which is a strength of ours with our youth, speed and coaching to get easy buckets/to the line with mismatches or easy fouls which will hopefully soften their defense early on. Of course the other cream on top is that is usually results in a boatload of wide open transition threes which we will not get without pounding the boards- Rondo's gotta be all over those boards and hitting Green and Olynyk with Peyton Manning lazers from one end to the other.

Couldn't be bothered going on any longer but those are some things to watch out for.

Ad your thoughts or things you'd like to see or think we will see :)

stop being a perimeter shooting team, stop shooting early in the shot-clock, play some D in the back court.

We match-up much better with Dallas than Houston, so not much to worry there on that regard. We'll see if we come cold or not.

Not likely. Dallas is a good team, and well, the Celtics don't seem to fare well against Western conference teams on the road. 21 straight losses by my count.

They are a far superior team to the Rockets

I'm not sure this is true. While the season is young, Houston has looked much better in their games than Dallas has. Houston also has better top-end talent.

Cool stat on the Western road games- but I'm still putting the Mavs at a much better team than last year- at least 7-12 wins more or 55-60 wins total- the Rockets (58 wins last year) aren't as good in my opinion, although Harden is taking more shots and giving more assists now that Parsons is gone. They've got enormous weakness inside off the bench and teams will just take it at Howard in the post and get him in foul trouble. No Lin, Asik or Parsons to contribute to those regular season wins either- they would have added at least 5-7 wins between them right?

In a 7 game series I've got the Mavs all day after 82 games of gelling and the enormous factor of Rick Carlisle over McHale.

Not impossible to win this,game....a prayer is about all the Celtics have.

Maybe hope Dirk, and Chandler get a stomach virus....?

About 99.9 %. ...improbable Celtics win.......over matched

The Mavs .....have everything we need to be competitive......maybe we need a new GM.

Too much fire power, size and experience = doom for this rebuilding club with no!star scorer or center

Not convinced that the Mavs are better than the Rockets.  Although, this is probably a moot point, as Dallas certainly looks like they are going to be a tough team in that tough Western Conference.

We will certainly have our hands full again tonight.

Our best hope is that Dirk has a night where he looks like an old man and that we don't allow Monta Ellis to get off to the kind of start that James Harden got off to the other night in Houston.

Oh, and shooting better than 30% from long range would help.

I think the Mavs well with us but not vice versa.   Our best chance to beat them between the foul lines and not below it.  Their bigs own ours but I like our guards vs. theirs, I still give them the edge.

Carlisle is on another level when it comes to coaching, too. JVG said (correctly) that you need good players to be a successful coach, but Dallas has been able to get away with a lot of suboptimal lineups because of their coaching.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

To win we need to do at least one of the following
1. Disrupt their pick and roll by preventing the ball handler from using the pick with pressure.
2. Shoot the lights out from 3
3. Get Dirk in foul trouble
4. Rondo or Jeff Green offensive takeover
5. create turnovers

If you replace Dirk's name with whatever good big man the Celtics are playing against, I think this is the recipe for a win in every game the Celtics will play this year.

Against the Nets, the C's forced turnover, shot well from 3, and didn't have to play against Lopez because he was hurt so they won. Against the Rockets, they shot awful from 3, couldn't get Dwight in foul trouble and couldn't get big scoring games from Rondo or Green (although they did produce some turnovers) so they lost.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Defend the pick and roll.

First and foremost.

Can't ever let Dallas get penetration.

Chandler and Dirk are probably the best pick and roll/pop combo in the league.  Almost impossible to defend Monta (maybe the fastest player in the league) coming off a 7'1" 260lb screen full speed and uncontested because everyone is worried about the acrobatic freight train running to the rim for an alley-oop, while Dirk is just hanging around on the perimeter daring a 3rd defender to rotate and help out.

Their offense might be at the top of the league, but I like our chances of picking apart their defense while Sully or Olynyk keeps Chandler out at the 3pt line.  Forget trying to stop them, focus on trying to outscore them.

Of course, if the refs are anywhere near as disgusting as they were in the last game our guys might as well lay on the floor.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Well I don't see the Mavs guarding us 27 feet from the hoop like Rondo said about the Rockets. If they do pick us up that far from the hoop then we need more players then just Rondo trying to break his player down. I think really that was the problem. Everyone was looking to pass out of the pressure. You have to punish a team if they extend their pressure that far from the hoop. Maybe we don't have the ball handlers but it certainly seems like we do. But if you take the guy off the dribble and beat the pressure, the defense is going to collapse in paint. And No team is going to have their team scrambling 48 mins like this. I hope Celts make right adjustments.

I'd like to see these adjustments more then if we lose or win.

Depending on the fact that the officials couldn't possibly call a game as bad as the Houston horror the other night, I have to believe we have a good chance at beating the Mavs as long as everyone is still dialed in to the game plan from the opener!!!

As long as the Celtics do not shoot historically bad like the other night, start moving the ball again, and clean up the fouling issue (some of that was beyond their control in the Houston game), I expect a competitive game for three quarters... and then Dallas will take over in the fourth. Frankly, I will be really happy if I just see a competitive game.
“Being a Celtic is, every decision you make is about the team. Every cut you make is about the team. Every pass you make is about the team. You take yourself out of it. It’s not for everyone. If you don’t want to win, don’t want to play team basketball, and it’s more about you then you’re probably not a Celtic." Doc 2010
