As Kawhi Leonard holds firm on his desire for a maximum contract, extension talks with the San Antonio Spurs have failed to gather traction despite a looming Friday deadline, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Quote
Leonard, 23, is considered one of the NBA's rising young stars, and multiple league executives told Yahoo Sports he'll command a max offer sheet on the market next summer. The Spurs would assuredly match a sheet and retain Leonard, but there remains the risk of Leonard signing a similar offer sheet to Dallas Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons.

Highly unlikely, but we can dream that SA would be stubborn enough to pay him.. and fall right into our 2015 FA lap.

I don't think highly unlikely is strong enough.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

So of course the next question is how much can we offer him?  ;D

He's been my favorite non-celtic for a while now. I'd give him the max over Rondo personally

Of course that's the next logical question, it wouldn't be CB if that question wasn't asked  ;D

Idk, Spurs like to spread their money around.  If he really wants max and they aren't willing I think he goes.  Better target for us than dreaming about Durant/Davis.

BTW, threads need merger

The Spurs signed Tim Duncan to max deals earlier in his career and just gave Parker a max extension.  They've opened the checkbook for the players they felt were worth it.

In other news, I love this report if not just because it'll shut up those insufferable "the Spurs are all about team and not EGO and GREED" morons.

This isn't surprising.  The NBA is talking about phasing in revenue from the new TV deal beginning in summer 2015 instead of 2016, which is what the CBA would call for.  If this occurs, Leonard's max deal could be $2-3 million more per year than if it doesn't.  I'm sure the Spurs don't want to commit to a contract that could wind up being $15 million more over the life of the deal if the NBA changes the rules after the deal has been agreed to.

Besides, there should be no rush to get a deal done.  He's a restricted free agent next summer -- they can always give him a max deal then if he earns it this year, or match any offer he gets.

The big risk for them, however, is if the salary cap next summer doesn't include any of the new TV money.  In this case, Leonard might be tempted to just take the qualifying offer and sign a new long-term deal the following summer, allowing him to make perhaps $6-7 million more per year for his new deal.  He would also not be a restricted free agent.  It'd be a major hit in his 2015 salary, about $12 million, but he could make that up by year 3 of his new deal.

it's probably because of the new TV deal. I think ultimately he will stay in SA, but for a new max contract

Simple. If they want to repeat ...they need to sign him ......he knows this .....and IMO .....deserves what he is asking.

I think they have to pay him......Duncan won't be around many more years,

no brainer. Why would Kawhi settle for anything less?

This is basically non-news.  Kawhi has no reason to give in and settle for less.  Spurs have every reason to give in and no reason to let him reach FA (costing them more).  Kawhi at least has incentive to sign an extension (injury) whereas the Spurs have no incentive to wait on locking him up (instead they have the incentive of saving money by signing the extension now).

This is just media nonsense.

TV money is going to start flowing in and the salary cap will go up.  This will happen at some point.  Kwahi will stay with San Antonio.
