http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/celtics_nba/boston_celtics/2014/10/celtics_notebook_injured_vitor_faverani_in_danny_ainge_s

I saw this in the Boston Herald -
Vitor Faverani’s knee surgery led to speculation that the Celtics, currently bridled with 16 guaranteed contracts, might consider waiving the Brazilian center.

However, president of basketball operations Danny Ainge shot down that notion yesterday, saying his goal is to have Faverani back on the floor later in the upcoming season.

“We like Vitor,” Ainge said. “The thing we want right now is to get him healthy. We thought he would be ready for the start of training camp, but he had a little setback.”

Faverani had surgery last spring to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Swelling reappeared in the knee at the start of training camp, forcing Faverani to the sideline and, ultimately, to get a second opinion from a surgeon in Spain.

An MRI taken of the knee prior to surgery was inconclusive, and Ainge admitted he still hasn’t heard details of what was found in the knee during surgery.

The Celts also have rookie forward Dwight Powell under contract for next season. Though coach Brad Stevens has been intrigued by Powell’s athleticism and versatility, the team also has to cut down to 15 players by the start of the season.

“We have things we can do before we waive someone,” said Ainge, leaving the door open for another trade.

Faverani is expected to miss 6-8 weeks and will spend the first two weeks of his recovery in Spain.

I have no idea what Danny is thinking but I'm thinking that talk about the Jeff Green being traded  (see Celticsblog post from 10/14). I am curious as to what could be done - hopefully its a Bass and Green trade.

Could be as simple/unsexy as a buyout.

^That, or dumping someone on the Sixers or another team with cap space with a draft pick as compensation.

I'm sure there are some basic negotiations that have gone on between the Celtics and other teams.  People know what they have and what other teams need -- and most of those needs grow, not shrink, due to injury as the pre-season wears on.  If an offer were truly attractive, a trade would already have been made.  If Dwight Powell (or Erick Murphy I guess) play themselves into a roster spot, then the offer may become more attractive to the Celtics, because freeing the roster spot has added value.  If Powell et al. can't earn the spot, then you go with what you've got unless the offer improves, since the roster spot has less value.  Heck, Powell himself may draw enough interest to become a future 2nd round pick.

I think Danny has shown, if nothing else, that he's more than capable of getting a deal done when a deal needs to get done.

For anyone but Faverani, Pressey, and Powell, I'd bet the cost is two 2nds at a minimum if you're purely dumping them.  Fav is a little cheaper and has his non-guaranteed year next season, making him a good trade chip at the deadline/offseason.  Pressey is a minimum salary guy and might get claimed by a someone taking a flyer, so no need to give up a pick.  Powell likely gets claimed too, and is cheap, so no need to give a pick.

Joel Anthony to Cleveland for Alex Kirk (waived)? Talent upgrade for the Cavs, LeBron adds another former Heatle to the group.

TBH if it was that much of a "basketball decision" I'd be surprised.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

1) Alex Kirk cannot be traded until December because he signed as a free agent in August.
2) Alex Kirk is making the rookie minimum salary just north of $500k, so even if he could be traded, he can only bring back $750k in salary by himself, which is $3 million less than Joel Anthony makes.

That said, if the Cavs REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted Joel Anthony, they could use the trade exception they got for sending Bogans to Philly.  But they don't want him remotely that badly.

Had confused Kirk with Erik Murphy, thought he'd been acquired via trade. And I was thinking of the Bogans exception for CLE, sending Kirk back to stay below roster max of 15.

I would love to play poker with you guys.   Ainge is not going to admit if he was going to waive Fav because it would lower his value if a deal came up and he moved him.  Never show your hand!

Fav is injured and hasn't proved anything in the NBA yet, his value can't get any lower than that. I really don't see any poker game going on here.

Eh, show your hand sometimes.  If you've got the best hand, there's nothing wrong if everyone's folded before you get beat on a draw.

I agree with you.  There's never anything to be gained by talking down your own asset.  Always talk 'em up.  Let others decide if they think it's obvious BS or not.

You'd probably be lucky to get Kirk Cameron
