Vitor Faverani Goes to Spain for 2nd Opinion, May Need More Surgery

The latest chapter in the Vitor Faverani saga includes the Boston Celtics center returning to Spain for a second opinion on his surgically-repaired left knee. He could possibly need a “cleanup” surgery within the next few days, according to head coach Brad Stevens.

“If that second opinion comes back that he needs extra work,” the coach said Saturday night before a preseason matchup with the Knicks at Mohegan Sun Arena, “then he would potentially have a cleanup type of surgery again on his knee on Monday. But that is not determined until that second opinion happens.”

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens expected to have a Faverani update Saturday, but any news of the 27-year-old’s condition has been pushed back while he waits to speak to a doctor in Spain. Faverani arrived at training camp proclaiming himself ready to start the season, but has dealt with swelling and soreness whenever he tried to suit up.

At last check, Stevens said the second-year pro had undergone two MRIs, neither of which have been conclusive. Oddly enough, he went through a similar process last season. MRIs showed nothing for about a month before doctors went in for arthroscopic surgery and spotted a torn meniscus.

Looking like injuries are going to wreck any chance of progress for Faverani this season.

Yeah ...he's toast for this season in all probability .   I never felt confident about his health.  That knee hasn't healed up right.

Yeah, I think if Faverani fails to show progress this year with Boston ... then he is done. Finished.

What if its not serious? (the injury) As an optimist I'm hoping the swelling isn't Something major and the guys is back after a couple extra weeks rehab.

If I have orthopedic or other related sports injuries, make millions of dollars a year and I want a second opinion, I'm going to Dr. James Andrew not some doctor in Spain. But that's just me.

If he is proclaimed done for the season and has surgery. We still owe him but get a hardship roster spot and the salary is covered by insurance I think. Not sure if salary still counts against the cap or if he is tradeable. Be interesting to find out. Anyone know?

we only signed Vitor for 2 years correct? so if we cut him, we will minimize our loss for only this season?
