Stauskas surprised at 'white' comment fallout

Following Sunday night's loss to the Toronto Raptors, the former Michigan star made a statement to the media that has rubbed some folks the wrong way.

"I understand that I'm a rookie and I'm white, so people are going to attack me at all times," he said. "Just coming out there in the game, I felt it right away."

Following Tuesday night's game, also against the Raptors, Stauskas tried to provide clarity for his words, but at the same time, he didn't back down from them.

"I was very surprised," Stauskas told Cowbell Kingdom. "People kind of took it too far with what I was trying to say. I wasn't trying to get anyone to feel sorry for me. I wasn't trying to be controversial or anything like that. I was just trying to keep it real."

And why?

I mean he should've just kept quiet and focused on playing, but lets not act like there isn't racial stereotypes going on.

ESPN is just trying to blow this out of proportion as usual.

There was a movie that was entitled "White Men Can't Jump". For the media to try and pretend that there are no stereotypes against white basketball players is absurd, and while I believe in equality, there are times where you're going to see exemplified reactions to it.

He simply just spoke of his opinion, while it was technically ill advised, was at least honest, and didn't back away from it.

Reminds me of Bird's comment about feeling insulted if a white guy was assigned to guard him. Players are prone to believe stereotypes as much as anyone. I remember individuals on this blog describing Hinrich early in his career as a no defense outside shooter. Considering defense was his best trait, that was odd.

Haha exactly.  I've used Hinrich as an example before myself.  Luke Jackson is another example.  I remember people saying he wasn't athletic enough to make it in the league.  Dude had the highest vertical out of anyone at his rookie camp.  Athleticism wasn't the issue with him.
