Well, Rondo is friends with Rudy Gay, and Gay knows Marc Gasol , so it's not out of the realm of,possibility. I'd be psyched to get Gasol but how is Gay any better than Jeff Green?
I guess if he gets Rondo to stay and gets Gasol to come, then he is better just for those points.
I guess the thinking is that if Jeff Green has a good year, Green is going to opt out and would require at least a Parsons/Hayward type contract to re-sign. Would Gay come here at a lower price (he would be a new FA contract signing) in order to play with Rondo & Gasol?
Green and Gay are very similar players in value -- similar efficiencies over their career. Gay shoots more, Green has been slightly more efficient and a better defender. I like Green a lot, but Gay at a discount might be better value than Green on a max contract.
If Green himself is willing to take discount to stay in Boston, that would change that calculus, of course. But a good season could put him in line for the biggest contract of his career whereas Gay has already 'got paid' on his current deal. And Green just donated a $1M to his alma mater - he may want the pay day.
'Would love to have Gasol no ifs ands or buts.
