He was the 45th pick in this past draft and the Celtics just picked him up in the Bogans trade.  I have not seen him play much and have not read much about him other than what I have read on NBA Draft Net and Draft Express.  From what I gather, he is a 6'11" spread the floor PF.  He has good athleticism, a high BB IQ, passes well, but his performance at Stanford was underwhelming and he's already 23.

I haven't seen much discussion of him elsewhere and thought he deserved his own thread.  What does everyone think about him?

TP on the thread. I'm a believer. Wanted Danny to get a 2nd rounder to pick up Powell, Dinwiddie, younger Greek Freak . . .so I'm definitely pleased he picked up Powell & 2 2nd rounders for Bogan's ridiculous contract (that shouldn't even exist).

I think more was expected out of Powell at Stanford (true stardom), but he was still a very solid player that did well and got better as he went along. I'd say JJJ is his floor. He has a good jump shot, can rebound and run and hustle. Should find a role in the NBA.

I don't think Powell has crazy potential but I think he can be a contributing role player in the NBA. He seems to have all the tools to be successful in a limited role for NBA teams.

I'm seeing this as well, but who can he be comparable to? Splitter? a lesser version of Gibson. Big men that have limited minutes and be able to contribute about 4-6 ppg and 3 rpg?

but I guess how he fairs in training camp

agree and he's on the cheap
power forward rotation sully, ko, bass (soon to be traded) anthony (same?) powell
sully and kelly need minutes period, bass we know what he can do  :-\  play good defense, shoot nice mid range game, mostly pick and pops, good free throws, bad….pass, rebound, spread the floor
I like what Bass has done for us but not sure we need to give him minutes for his pay scale.  Sully should start, kelley can give you pf/c minutes but he's too good for third string and bass is as well

6'10", great athlete, on the light side, nice passer, nice midrange jumper, weak rebounder, underachieving help defender,  four-year man always on the cusp of prospect-dom.

Dwight Powell, get aggressive and don't be like this guy!

JJJ is his floor.

If JJJ is his floor ... it sounds more like a basement sump

I'm feeling in  a slump just reading about another nobody scrub joining the team.   But I suppose he is better than Bogans , who made millions for sitting at home watching REAL players play NBA ball.

Watch from 2:35. Powell has a nice steal, nice drive and dunk and jump shot.  The best position for him in the nba looks like it will be at the SF spot.

Really like the idea of him as a prospect. Definitely passes the eye test, but what worries me is that he never really dominated in college and fell to 45 in the draft. One of those situations where his red flags are more about what we don't see.

How can someone with such a smooth jump shot and high release score so little. How can a player who is capable of authoritative poster dunks have so little tape available after 4 years of college ball? How's his drive? His conditioning? His killer instinct?

I don't think Powell has crazy potential but I think he can be a contributing role player in the NBA. He seems to have all the tools to be successful in a limited role for NBA teams.

I agree with this sentiment. Sure hope he proves me wrong, would be very happy to see him be the next evolution of this team's Glen Davis (1st or second big off the bench), but more likely to provide a Leon Powe type of role on a competitive team.

Leon Powe was a very good role player for us.  The problem was that injuries derailed his career with the Celtics.

Powell has a much better jumpshot than Powe ever did.  Powe's specialty was attacking the rim and getting the score and he also chipped in with rebounding.

Powell looks more like a stretch and pop player who will use his athleticism to get to the rim when the defense is playing badly.  And a lot of his 'highlight' dunks are either against bad defense or much shorter defenders.

Regardless I hope he makes the cut and contributes positively to the team.

I feel like Bass, Thornton, Anthony are the next to go.  I only wish we could move them and picks for a Hibbert or maybe a Sanders type.
