Marvin played briefly with the Celtics in the late 70's.  I liked him and thought he was an okay player.  Unfortunately, drugs got the best of him and never reached his expected potential.  I never knew how good he was until I read Bob Ryan's Globe article today.

Marvin we were all rooting for you.....May You Rest in Peace

Its surreal for me right now. I was cleaning my basement and saw a pic of me and my boys from pc camp. And I was thinking of Barnes....literally today.

Marvin has had a big impact on my life. The first and only time I ever met him was at PC basketball camp in the summer. He told us his story and I took it to heart. But after all was said and done and me and my friends were going home from the camp we met up with our parents and friends and etc in Johnston RI. Anyway, I remember my best friends making fun of him and doing impersonations of his speech he gave, also the parents got into it and called him a junkie and etc.
I remember chiming in and saying"This guy just told us the most embarrassing and darkest parts of his life, hopefully to help us, does he really deserve to be made into leper or a joke"?

I'll never forget saying that and I will never forget the need for all those people to gossip and ridicule Barnes.....almost like a group joke/mentality. Thats one thing in life I have learned is that gossip has no age limit or social status or income level, and if anything it seems to get worse after college.

RIP Barnes

Thank you for sharing your story.  From your experience and Ryan's article I get the feeling that  he was a good-natured person.
