Was just thinking on Thorton what some trades spots would be for him if we decide to flip him for some assets? My best thought would be Chicago for some bench scoring. Thoughts?

A team like the Raptors could use him.

I think he actually has negative trade value, hence why we got picks and Zeller for taking on his contract. What would make sense is to trade him to Philly for J-Rich and send them cash to make up the contract difference. Clears cap space and gets rid of a player we don't need that may become a locker room disturbance if he doesn't get the playing time he wants. J-Rich may be out for the season so no controversy over PT and if he does return he's big enough to put in spot minutes at SF for us.

Saves cap space, avoids headaches, and clears a log jam at SG. That's about the best I could hope to get out of Thornton at this point. Philly gets a little extra cash for making our problem go away. Win-win IMHO.

A playoff contender looking for a SG who can provide some scoring is probably more interested in Ray Allen, so there might not be a deal for Thornton out there until Allen lands somewhere.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If we are truly thinking about contending for the playoffs, then I like him for our team as the 4th guard. In this situation we will assume Babb, Bogans, and Johnson are moved /cut and we need to pretend that Pressey, Wallace, and Young really aren't going to play - he provides a real scoring punch off the bench and also has range. Bayless got a lot of minutes on last year's team, there's no reason Thornton can't find some time this year. I am also not taking into account potential injuries.

However, if we can get anything of value for him, then of course we should move him. While he has a fit here, there are other teams who could definitely use him more.

I think Marcus Thornton would be great in Chicago. Not as a bench scorer but as their starting SG. He is exactly the type of player that Bulls team needs to add. An explosive scorer/shooter to play alongside Derrick Rose.

When a team like Chicago is limited in ability to attract high quality star scorers, but has a top tier defensive + rebounding team in place, a more limited role player score-first player like Marcus Thornton can be a very valuable addition to the team .

Marcus Thornton while considered a flawed role player on vast majority of teams can be the right type of role player to add when you have stars like Joakim Noah who are non-scorers but elite facilitators (team defense, rebounding, team offense). To provide that extra scoring punch that star players unable to provide and can live with lesser defense from role player due to defensive talent throughout rest of team.

I'd love to see Marcus Thornton find himself in a situation like that. I think that would be fantastic for him and fantastic for the Chicago Bulls.

Edit: For example -- similar to role Vernon Maxwell player on 1994 Rockets. A team that was very limited in terms of shot-creation outside of Hakeem Olajuwon. The Rockets needed Maxwell's shot-creation (largely inefficient volume scorer type) and secondary playmaking to balance out rest of team and allowed other role players to stay within confines of role and function to highest level of their abilities. Marcus Thornton could play a similar necessary role on offensively challenged Bulls team alongside D-Rose.

Marcus Thornton may make sense for the Bulls talent-wise, but there is no realistic workable trade under salary cap rules.

Why not just let him play?  He's expiring anyway, no?

Doesn't really improve OKC in any meaningful way for them to feel that'd be worth it.  Maybe if he were a better shooter from deep: 36% for his career is decent, but he's not even in Morrow's stratosphere in that regard, who's certainly going to be the designated long-range bomber for the team.  His game overlaps very much so with the skillsets of both Jeremy Lamb and Reggie Jackson, so he'd have no purpose there and would likely just not even see minutes in the rotation -- essentially the same issue he's facing in Boston.

Why not just let him play?  He's expiring anyway, no?

He won't have the minutes to play, unless the Celtics decide to completely bench Young.  The guard rotation of Rondo/Bradley/Smart/Turner/Pressey/Young/Thornton means at least two of those players are going to see very infrequent minutes.  Barring any trades, those two guys are likely to be Pressey and Thornton: Rondo and Bradley are the two best guards, Smart's obviously not going to be benched, and Turner and Young are going to be evaluated this season.  On a rebuilding team, I think it'd be pretty useless to prioritize giving Thornton minutes over the younger guys.

I doubt we can get 'some assets'. I'd consider it a win if we got a second rounder for him.

If I were Ainge, I might settle for a slightly smaller expiring contract of a less talented player that saves the team $1-2 million.

Just keep in mind that he can't be traded with another player for some reason, per my experience on espn's nba trade machine.  Does anyone know why?

Just have to wait 30 days from the day he was traded to include other players, part of the cba.

Move your mouse pointer over the "no" symbol and there is an explanation (although the year should be 2014, not 2015).
