Why would we want too?   He is inefficient and a poor shooter.

He's actually very efficient when he plays in the paint.
Unfortunately when Larry Drew was his coach in ATL he just let him have free reign to let Horford have freedom in the paint. It led to Smith's jumpshot obsession.
If you made Smith shoot 80% + from within 5 feet of the basket, he'd be a serious bench All Star candidate.

No way they'd resign Monroe and still keep Smith as having both guys is redundant.

In fact, if anything I would go as far to assume that if Ainge doesn't go after Smith, that he truly intends on a long-term rebuild and Rondo is gone by the deadline in February.

Smith has NO ROLE on this team whatsoever. He's entirely ineffective at the 3, so bringing him in means we have yet another 4 when we already have a logjam for minutes at that same position. Why would I want an overpaid, no-defense 4 whose PER and per 36 numbers were worse than both Sullinger and Olynyk (who are both on rookie contracts)?

no defense? are you serious? synergy sports has smith giving up around only .55 points per possession as a PF the last few years. that's incredibly low, he's easily a top-10 defender in this league when playing his natural PF position. he's also much better offensively when he's not asked to be a small forward, which pushes him back out of his range. he's also a strong playoff performer, just watch the tape of any of the c's games against the hawks, smith was often the best player on the court.
he does have offensive talent inside, too, much better than, say, omer asik, who is a comparable defensive player but has far fewer offensive skills.
this isn't to say we should go get smith - c's already have too many questionable jump shooters, and smith is getting old enough that it's hard to see him making an impact on a future title run on a team that needs a few years to grow. it just irks me that so many posters are completely dismissive of him.

I'm not so sure about that, but only because Sully's jump shot within the arc is more than fairly consistent, while Josh Smith's is erratic and is often utilized at the worse possible times lol.

Well yeah they're both efficient in the paint but Smith would be a great defensive asset-dumps all over Sully as a defender.
I think that's what people forget about Smith..he shoots worse shots than Rudy Gay when he wants to, but he defends like Serge Ibaka when he wants to.

Pull his leash and get him disciplined in the paint and he could be a two way star.


ps I also remember when Sully was drafted that you wanted no piece of him...you also wished you were wrong about him being a bust at the time.
Has he pleasantly surprised you or you waiting for a season at PF to decide?

Still the curtain is closing on Smith's athleticism.  He has maybe 4-5 years and he won't be elite athlete anymore as he is 28.   Since his skill level is not high, his game will take a hard fall.

4-5 years is plenty of time for any team looking to contend right now.  That's not really a hang up.

jokes aside, I think it's good for him, so he can explore the market in 2015. Take a one year deal, see how and where the Pistons will go, what directions they are taking, and if you want out, you can leave in free agency

If we could get a serious center upgrade using Sully / KO, then I would be all over taking on Smith. However, adding him to our plethora of PFs doesn't make too much sense right now.

The thought of adding Josh Smith to other bad outside shooters like Rondo, Smart, and Turner makes me ill. A team of poor outside shooters will get killed in this league and would have to rely on an extremely fast pace with lots of fast break basketball, concentrating on speed, athleticism and a runner's like conditioning, ala 80's fast break basketball players. I just don't see Stevens being able to sell that to that group of players.

As much as I am not a fan of OLynyk, if he can continue to shoot a TS% in the 55-57% area, that's the type of shooting player you need to put alongside a Rondo or Smart when they play PG. For that reason I would have preferred Ainge picking up a Jodie Meeks like player than an Evan Turner like player.

There are two additional circumstances in which a trade requires the player's consent:

When the player is playing under a one-year contract (excluding any option year) and will have Larry Bird or Early Bird rights at the end of the season. This includes first round draft picks following their fourth (option) season, who accept their team's qualifying offer for their fifth season. When the player consents to such a trade, his Larry Bird/Early Bird rights are not traded with him, and instead becomes a Non-Bird free agent3.
For one year after exercising the right of first refusal to keep a restricted free agent. The player must consent to a trade to any team, although he cannot be traded to the team that signed him to the offer sheet.

They can only trade Monroe with his consent though.

That means if Monroe wants he can make it quite difficult for them to get value for him.

For that reason I would have preferred Ainge picking up a Jodie Meeks like player than an Evan Turner like player.

Well we still don't know Turner's contract amount, but Meeks signed for 3/19 so he could easily be making more than 3 times as much as Turner.

I wouldn't be shocked if Danny preferred Meeks too, but couldn't afford him.
