Who's rebuild is better: Boston or Philly?

To celebrate my 1000th post on Celticsblog (great site by the way!). I've decided to ask this question: who do you think is closer to contention in the future? The Celtics or the Sixers, try to be as objective as you can.

Title contention?

Boston. The Sixers don't have anyone close to a player of Iverson's caliber on their roster, and without that, they're not reaching the Finals.  The Celtics have more potential to swing a deal into contention, while Philly is in full Thunder mode -- surprising, considering they're not trying to convince fans to stay away so they can move the team (or are they?!)

Philly's been at the "rebuild" one year longer. So when you talk about their "plan" compared to the C's its not clear the plan will end up being all that different. Rondo could end up traded for assets and then its the same sort of plan just the C's are one year behind if you look at things on a schedule.

That depends on how you look at rebuilding, though -- you could say they've been rebuilding since 2006.

Without a doubt, the Celtics.

The 76er's practically gave away their talent last year while receiving less value for the dollar.  What will they do with Young ?  Hopefully they actually get equal value for him somewhere down the road. Sure, they got lucky with the ping pong balls and landed three talents in Embiid, Noel, and MCW.

I'm personally not that high on MCW, and their prize pieces are damaged goods.  They really better hope to hells bells that Noel & Embiid can stay off the trainers table.

The Celtics have more assets, more picks, Rondo, & a better coach.  If Ainge hit on Smart or Young, or both, watch out.  You're setup to succeed a lot sooner rather than later.  It's going to be later regardless for the 76er's unless Embiid and Noel just dominate from the start.  I think the only thing they dominate from the start is the electrical tape in the trainer's room.

I understand that part.  Are we talking contention for playoff berth, division title, conference title, championship contention?  People's expectations of things can be different.

Short term rebuild - celtics have more assets and a stronger base of players to build from if they can get lucky and secure a trade with a top player.

Long term rebuild, still pretty up in the air.  If Noel and Embid pan out to be the players they potentially could be, then it might be Philly.

Did the Sixers really trade Turner away for "less value on the dollar" when he could only manage a sub-MLE deal from a rebuilding team this offseason? He didn't have much worth to begin with. They actually got some fair value out of Hawes: a surprising contributor in Henry Sims and two second rounders.

I say only one year longer because I think Hinkie only came in as GM at that point.

Sure, they got lucky with the ping pong balls and landed three talents in Embiid, Noel, and MCW.

Therefore, their rebuild is going much much better. MCW might not be all-star material but he's a definite asset for his D. Noel and Embiid are absolute beasts, even if they each have a 50% chance of being permanently hampered by injuries, that 25% outcome puts Philly way ahead of us. None of our players have anything close to Embiid's potential. If you're talking about Rondo, well he's a great player, but Embiid can be 100x as good.

Their rebuild started at the same as the Celtics'. Hinkie came in right after their season ended and traded Jrue Holiday on the same night the Celtics traded Pierce and Garnett.

Absolutely it's Philly. This isn't even close. They drafted a future all star PG in MCW. They killed New Orleans on one of the most lopsided deals of the decade. Not to mention this year they crushed it with Saric and Embiid. Saric would have been much better than Marcus Banks 2.0.

Hinkle has guts. That's more than I can say about Ainge who refuses to trade role players like Rondo, Bass, Green etc...

Hell I would take Minnesota's young core over anyone on this roster. When Hinkle's contract is up they need to offer him anything in order to get someone in here who will do what it takes to tank hard and rebuild the correct way.
