This past year, Gilbert Arenas gave an interview on BR about a possible comeback. When asked about the current NBA, he had this to say about Derrick Rose. (This was a few weeks after his injury.)

Quote
B/R: What advice would you have given Derrick Rose?

GA: What he did last year when he missed the whole season was perfect. I loved every moment of it. That's what he should've done. If I could've [waited] longer, that's what I would've done.

When I saw the first preseason game, and everybody was, 'Oh, Derrick Rose is back,' I said to myself, 'He's not going to last 15 games.' Derrick Rose's problem was that, when you land, your knee comes inward. While I'm watching the games, he was—like him and [Russell] Westbrook, they're wild jumpers. Every time he jumps, he's wild. Every time he lands, he's wild. His ability never changed. He never corrected his jumping pattern or his landing pattern.

It was like having a Ferrari on not Ferrari tires. You have it on spare tires. So that's how I would put it: He has a Ferrari engine on spare tires—eventually, they're going to blow.

But when I saw him jumping, I was like, 'Oh man, I wish I could talk to him and say listen, you need to change your game a little bit. You can't go in the lane jumping and exploding like you did. Your body's not ready for it.'

My advice, especially for the first month of basketball, first two months: Just change the way you play. Stay on the ground as much as possible. Don't hit the lane as hard with so much force. That's what you should learn—like with Westbrook. He should have perfected that mid-range game over the summer.

I'm personally interested to see if this had changed...
 Thoughts?

I don't think Gilbert Arenas had to say that he would've taken the opportunity to get paid by the NBA for not playing in the NBA if he'd had one.  :D

Talk about a dude who was never the same after his first knee injury, though.

Nice post.....one thing that I'm happy about is that Rondo seemed pretty "grounded" last year. Maybe he and Agent Zero had a conversation about that. Doubt it, but he seemed to be prudent in his physical decisions last year. The team's circumstances were right for that tack anyway.

My thoughts are that's exactly what Rondo did (obviously we already knew Rondo is smarter than Rose).  "Stay on the ground as much as possible. Don't hit the lane as hard with so much force."  That's why Rondo shot 15-20% lower than normal in the lane.

As for that first paragraph, why do we care what Arenas have done?  If we ask Jordan or Bird they'd probably say Rose is a weak idiot for taking the entire season and that they would have came back for the playoffs.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

This is what I have been wondering about a number of players today. Sure they are stronger and faster, but with the exception of a few guys with highly unusual body structure like Lebron and Shaq, these guys aren't built to handle the repetitive high stress that their speed and strength puts on their joints and bones. I can see Bradley having similar issues if he doesn't adapt his game.

I don't know, Basketball's always been a pretty physically demanding sport. I think we just hear about more injuries faster today.

I actually quite agree with what Agent Zero said...

I do see Rose always land kind of awkwardly...I remember even calling it out in college too before his injury...very explosive but lands awkwardly, I think he will get injured sometime in the future because of it. I love watching D.Rose play so I always wish for him to be healthy

Recency bias for sure, combined with better overall media coverage.

I see a lot of comments like this with guys like Yao, Oden, Rose, Big Z, etc over the years.

I wonder how much of it is just hindsight playing tricks on our memories, or perhaps someone always is worrying every player is going to have chronic injury issues.

Supposedly Rose has been talking in interviews that he is trying to change the way he plays and not go recklessly into the lane as he used to.

If the team USA scrimmage is any indication, Rose looks pretty good. and I HOPE he is back to his normal self this year because I feel the Bulls are the one team that can oust the heat in the east

Rose/butler/Dunleavy/gasol/Noah  with Gibson/hinrich/mirotic off the bench

Why are you talking about the Heat?

Right -- I don't recall anyone saying anything about Rose going down at the start of last season. Same with Michael Redd, actually.

my buddy is a physical therapist who is in love with his job, so whenever we hang out or I see him at the gym, he talks for hours about body motion, what's natural, what's not, form and such...kinda got me watching sports sometimes and just go "man, that looks awkward"

For sure, but there's a difference between aesthetic awkwardness and incorrect body movements. Not that I don't think you know the difference, of course.

I'm still no expert ;), but my buddy did fix my tendinitis issues and my back spasms in the past, so I believe a lot of things he says lol
