According to this link, the Pistons and Hawks have talked about a potential Greg Monroe sign and trade

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/01/report-greg-monroe-doesnt-really-have-a-great-interest-in-going-back-and-playing-with-the-pistons/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcs

So I was thinking, what if this were to take place

Detroit signs and trades Monroe to Atlanta for Al Horford

Detroit then slots Horford at the 4 with Drummond at the 5.

Then, they deal Josh Smith to Boston for Jeff Green and Brandon Bass.

Maybe it turns into a 3 way, although sign and trades can't be allowed in 3 team deals, right?

My gut tells me we are going to go youth movement, but I still give it a 60% chance. I would just like to know the direction of this team.

Same here.

I have NO clue what the direction of this team is right now.

So then we could have JSmith on the god-awful contract ($13.5 through 2016/17 - 3 more years!) here playing the three and chucking up inordinate bad shots? Hell no!

I don't want Smith here if he has to play the 3. So that means moving Sully to slide Smith over to the PF and Turner the starting SF.

But I still don't think Rondo is Steven's guy. I think Smart with his D, good BBIQ and better potential to score will be the Starting PG by next season at the latest. So Smith to hear will not be the best move.

Detroit wins this trade and will make the playoffs, hawks might do it for monroe but monroe and millsap is not a good tandem

i'll trade bass and green but in the west

we are stacked up with power forwards, so what we need is a center

green bass for mozgov, sanders, len, noguiera, kanter, pekovic, nene, i'll do that in a heartbeat

We loose out on this trade but it sure helps DET.  No way DA does it.

It is not going to be for Horford.  Monroe allows Horford to finally slide over to PF.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This is lightly being talked about in another thread, but perhaps Sully gets moved in a trade centered around Pekovic (after Minny acquires Wiggins and decides to go with youth), then we make this trade to get Smith. A Pek/Smith frontcourt would be a pretty good pairing on both ends of the court.

I'd do a trade directly with Detroit:

Bos out: Rondo, Wallace and Bass (EDIT)
Bos in : Monroe, Pope, Jennings

We go very young and Detroit competes now. Detroit gets the best player and gets something for Monroe, and we get Monroe/Pope and have to swallow Jennings for two years.

I like the Monroe for Rondo angle but we would probably need to sweeten it with picks for Detroit to take it.

I seriously doubt the Hawks would give up Horford in a sign and trade for Monroe.  I think they want to set up a 3 man big rotation of Monroe, Horford, Millsap.  Atlanta does have cap room so they can take back more salary than they send out.  Something like Carroll, Payne, Schroeder, and a couple future 1st's works financially but I'm not sure taht would be enough for Detroit, but it wouldn't be terrible value for a guy that doesn't want to be there and who will likely just sign for a year and leave as an unrestricted free agent next summer.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner
