I have seen several "post SL" Rookie of the Year Predictions. This from nba.com

http://www.nba.com/2014/news/07/04/rookie-ladder-before-summer-league-milwaukees-parker-tops-the-list/

Basically, Smart is not cracking the top 10 on any list.

I am seeing Nick Stauskas (10), PJ Hairston (8) and Elfrid Payton (4) ahead of him as total disses

Also, unlikely that raw talent like Exum (7) or Gordon (9) are better than him THIS YEAR.

Also, in the event of a Rondo trade - he is the starting PG for Boston.

Sports journalists' lists are bullcrap 99% of the time.

Here's 10 guys I've put in order based on my sheer impression alone. Let me google some **** on each of these guys and call it a writeup.

Bill Simmons is probably the only one who does good ones. Also, hate to admit it, some of the Bleacher Report ones based on numbers are decent.

#1 Parker - he is the best player on his team.
#2 Noel - a close second for me.
#3 Wiggins is a big question mark because of the Lebron effect. If traded to Minni could be #1

Outside those 3, I think there is a group of 3-4 bubble guys who could compete.

If Rondo is traded - I would say Smart would jump to no lower than #3 on the list.

I agree on #1 and 2. I don't think Wiggins is ready, even on a team built to feature him.

If I were Stephens I would tape this on his and Young's locker to motivate them.

I'm not certain that he'd start if Rondo were traded, and I'm fine with the top seven on that list. Gordon, Stauskas, and Hairston ahead of him  are probably a reach.

But Smart has real problems with shooting, which IMO he has to improve upon in order to be a good player at the NBA level.

I don't see anybody outside of Parker or Noel winning ROTY.

And I have no idea how so many people could be so low on Randle pre-draft and now he features as #2 on lists like this.

Exum and Gordon are raw and Wiggins isn't ready to show the aggressiveness needed to be a 20+ scorer at this stage. Noel will be a monster on defense and Parker on offense. I think Parker is the ROTY on a Bucks team that needs his scoring punch.

Marcus Smart will be a top 5 rookie this year, and that's without taking into account whether he improves his shooting. He impacts way too much of the game in other areas. I wish ball deflections showed up on a stat sheet, because he is so active and got his hands on so many passes on the perimeter leading to steals for others.

I do think he wont be as bad of a shooter as he was in the summer league. It looked like to me he was working on his pro-3 point shot the most this summer and was launching a lot of threes he probably shouldn't have. He'll have better discipline in the regular season, and I expect him to attack the basket more.

There were a lot of rookies who struggled with their shot this summer as well.

I am not saying Smart is perfect. His shooting is streaky at best. Still - he was filling the stat sheet which is evident by his +13.2 PIE

He was rebounding well, 4.2 Rebs
Distributing well - 4.2 Ast while playing SG for 90% of the time (seriously, what's with Danny's many crush on Pressy)
Taking care of the ball (only 1.8 TOs)
and stealing like a maniac 2.0 SPG

He was also getting better each game. I could see him getting 15/6/6/2 Pts/Rb/Ast/Stl if he started

As if isn't already a firecracker now.......all these people jumping on him won't light a fire under him.

He'll be a man on a mission for sure.

I'm going to give the dude two years ....just like Fab , JJJ. And all of the past failures to improve before I declare bust.

I hope he makes all these critics eat their words

To be fare, the reporter wrote this before Summer League began, so he really doesn't know what he'd talking about.

Right now no way I'd put Exum,Gordon,Staskasus over Smart.

McBuckets played really well in SL, handled the defensive changes and double teams, and if Wiggins stays in Cleveland he'll have the benefit of playing with Lebron, they both have a shot in the top 3.

Noel may get hurt because he's more of a defensive player and they seem to look at offesive numbers more.

I think Smart if given enough playing time could be in the top 5. But also very easily drop if he can't improve his shooting a little bit before the season.

A media / fan poll? The Lakers could have drafted me and I'd make it top three on here.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.

Unless there is a trade, Marcus Smart will be coming off the bench whereas most of those other players will start and play heavy minutes. Having said that, the list makes sense.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.
