There are a few problems with his weight.  First, he doesn't have the quickness to defend a lot of 4s in the league.  If he was at about 260 he would be much more effective and he could play the 4 full time which I think would be his best position.

Second is the combination of his age, his lifetime of weight issues, and his consistent weight gain.  He was 268 at the combine and was considered overweight.  He gained weight during his first season, gained weight during last season, and looks to have gained weight this offseason.  I'm guessing he's pushing 300 now.  That's a scary pattern for a 22 year old as it will only get harder to keep the weight off.  Shaq by comparison was quite ripped at the same age and gained his weight gradually over a twenty year career.

Third, it's only going to add to his back problem.

We know for a fact that he is at least 280 (we've all seen the workout video when he steps on the scale).  I agree with you...he must be pushing 290-300lbs and the really unfortunate part is how unconcerned he seems with it.   He clearly stated he's not concerned with weight.

I don't get it either, his weight hasn't been a detriment in his career so far, so why would it suddenly be one now?

And that's not even mentioning the fact that there's pretty much no way he can come into camp in worse shape than last season, when he had to spend most of the offseason not working out to recover from the surgery.

I don't know, I guess I just don't see the weight as a huge detriment to his game (which isn't based on athleticism), especially since the offseason isn't over and he still has a lot of time to finish his conditioning

He is bigger than ever so his weigh is a concern.  Do you think being overweight and out of shape will help him??  Maybe he thinks he can be the next Oliver Miller.

Being bigger doesn't necessarily mean he's out of shape.  From watching a video, you don't know if he looks bigger due to gaining muscle, what his plans are for the rest of the offseason, or what kind of overall shape he's in.

I agree that "being bigger doesn't necessarily mean he's out of shape", but....being fatter does!!!  I've never seen a muffin top of muscle.
The bottom line is that he's out of shape.  Is it a huge deal?...No.  But, is it a concern when you consider his injury history?...Yes.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

He's more Antoine Walker(minus the ballhandling) than Antawn Jamison.

It is a major issue that he is fat.  Like someone said, he has the skills to be more Kevin Love than Big Baby if he got his butt in shape.  He could end up costing himself 70 million dollars over his career by staying out of thinness.

Watching Sweetney in SL was so sad. You could clearly see the skill level and the feel for the game was there, but his own body was not allowing him to play.

Yeah, it's crazy. Doesn't feel right to make fun of him.

How would it get harder to keep the weight off?

What's the issue?

The issue is that anyone on this forum, as well as tens of millions of sports fans out there would eat green salad 5 times a day and do 1000 squats, if he had a chance to play for the Celtics and earn millions of dollars and it p---es us off when a guy who had the god given talent do be an allstar player in this league and help rebuild our beloved team arrives in pre-season looking like the Pillsbury dough boy...

If you look at players who had weight issues early on, how many of them continued to improve without addressing those issues?  It's possible that Sullinger's development will plateau around the level he played last season unless he gets into better shape.

I'm worried that Sullinger will play just well enough to earn a big multi-year contract with the Celtics, then eat his way out of the starting lineup.
yea me too. Sullinger knows how much the Celts believe in him, and he is just gonna eat his way out of our hearts. This is a blue collar team, get with it Sully.

You'll figure out when you start turning around on the wrong side of 25 ;)

The human body is a lot more forgiving in the early 20s than it is later in life. My experience was that while I was able to keep in fairly good shape by just leading a generally active lifestyle through high school and college, at 28 I had to specifically watch what I eat and follow a religious workout regimen or things got out of hand really quickly. I'm guessing this is not atypical.

Haha, I'm 28. I don't know, it's just hard for me to believe considering he's a basketball player working with NBA trainers and dietitians. And he's only 22 years old... there's still time for a change in his attitude about fitness.
